5 out of 5 stars Hendrix' Best Album Ever Has Just Gotten Even Better!   November 14, 2006

Carrying on from the experimentation with sound effects that he started on the second album, "Axis: Bold As Love", Hendrix takes his experimentation on to an even higher level resulting in this masterpiece of music which is his best album. Although not as popular as his relatively commercial and hit strewn debut album, Hendrix' legacy as a great experimenter proponent of rock guitar is never more evident than on this brilliant album. For this reason, Hendrix reminds me a lot of Miles Davis who was also never content to stay in a commercial rut but was always surprising everyone with his innovation. Hendrix was to rock what Davis was to jazz. Everyone's heard of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and the Bob Dylan cover "All Along the Watchtower" and yet these are not even the stronger tracks on this album. For example the first version of "Voodoo Chile" which was way too long to be a single in those days offers a lot more gems to treasure as well as the brilliant "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" among many others. This as is the case for all truly classic albums has to be heard completely at one sitting to truly receive the Jimi Hendrix Experience which is the best way to describe listening to this and indeed his two previous albums as well. You don't just listen to his music, it is truly an experience. This version of the album is also the best one that's out there at the moment. The mini-replica cardboard gatefold sleeve packaging is a work of art in itself and it comes with a 24 page booklet with liner notes written by Jimi himself among others as well as a separate booklet with all the lyrics in Japanese. The sound quality has also been remastered to perfection making this essential listening for all classic rock fans as well as aspiring rock guitarists. Very, very highly recommended!
