Vanessa Hudgens is not "indescribable," as the MC who opens V proclaims in a hopped-up, hyped-out voice. On the contrary, the smoky-eyed High School Musical star commands a multitude of adjectives--she's adorable, talented, ambitious, and as this debut makes clearer than a set of invisible braces, young. With one foot in the grown-up, club-going world and the other in a powder-pink bedroom with a Barbie under the bed, Hudgens kicks out a crop of hooky and highly accessible tracks here. First single "Come Back to Me" dabbles in a sophisticated breed of disco, "Let's Dance" lets rip a whispery torrent of R-rated come-ons, and "Let Go," bolstered by its girls-night-out lyric, loses its inhibitions beneath an R&B-lite beat. Elsewhere, on tracks no less compelling, Hudgens explores her inner Hilary Duff: "Drive" pops the hood on her pop-anthem side ("As long as I'm alive, I'm gonna drive"), and "Afraid" wrestles with a sense of vulnerability all wrapped up in teen hormones ("Why am I so afraid/I can't see what's come over me"). Split personality or no, Hudgens makes a strong case through her Anna Nalick-reminiscent vocals alone that she's someone worth watching--a lot of emotion pours through her still-developing pipes and, as anybody who saw High School Musical knows, the girl can twirl. -Tammy La Gorce

    Album Description
Vanessa Anne Hudgens, the star who portrays Gabriella Montez on the runaway hit "High School Musical," has signed an exclusive recording deal with Hollywood Records. Her debut CD "V" is being released September 26. Said Buena Vista Music Group Chairman Bob Cavallo, "We are delighted to have Vanessa at Hollywood. Not only is she talented, she is tireless in her work ethic and has a vision for her career. People will be very impressed when they hear her voice and see her perform." Certainly, Vanessa is no stranger to performing. She made her feature film debut in Catherine Hardwick's "Thirteen" starring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood. Most recently she co-starred in the action-adventure film "Thunderbirds" and is a recurring guest star on the Disney Channel's "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody." Vanessa began her acting career in musical theater when she was 8 years old. She has played leading and supporting roles in "Evita," "Carousel," "The Wizard of Oz," "The King and I," "The Music Man," "Cinderella," and "Damn Yankees," among others.

    3 out of 5 stars Vanessa Hudgen's V - Album Review   September 26, 2006
9 out of 11 found this review helpful

"Y'all need to get ready to hear the unbelievable, indescribable, Vanessa Hudgens," raps a guest star on Vanessa Anne Hudgen's (High School Musical) newest album, simply titled 'V'. Yet, after Hudgen's catchy R&B inspired single "Come Back To Me" ends I failed to see the unbelievable singer mentioned as the first track began. Hudgen's has musical capability, yet her CD fails to compare to earlier album's released by other Disney acts.

After "Come Back To Me", Vanessa sticks to the R&B vibe and let's loose on "Let Go" - a girls night out song that has a creative big band backtrack. "Say Ok", the album's first ballad, fails to bring any emotion. The guitar heavy girl anthem "Never Underestimate A Girl" comes next - the song is undoubtedly a tweenage spin-off of Destiny's Child's "Independent Woman". A beat driven "Let's Dance" comes next, but the muffled singing and hard guitar beats ruin the song. Hudgen's is at her best on the pop-rock songs "Drive", "Afraid", and "Rather Be With You", which resemble early Hilary Duff material. 'V' ends with "Lose Your Love" - a song reminiscent of Beyonce's singles. Other tracks include "Whatever Will Be", "Promise", and "Psychic".

Although 'V' has its faults, it's a solid effort; and even though Hudgen's has proved she has no problem pulling off any type of music, her next album should stray from dabbling in to many varieties of music as 'V' does.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever!   October 12, 2006
8 out of 10 found this review helpful

Vanessa's new album "V" is the best album ever.

the song "Come Back To Me", which is the one i love the most, is like a story about a boy and a girl and the girl is telling the guy to come back to her and she can't take it is anymore.

the song "Let Go", is like a party and thats perfect for me, is where a person who has worked very hard and just want to relax and have a good time with friends.

the song "Say Ok", i like it cause its peaceful, is about a person who can be lonely and wants someone to tell her ok and have someone with her.

the song "Never Underestimate A Girl",i like it cause its about a spoiled girl like me kind of, is like telling people to never look down on a girl cuz she gets anything she wants every time.

the song "Let's Dance", i like it cause its dancing, is asking you to take her to dance and show her how to and its telling you to keep everything together.

the sond "Drive",i like it even if i don't drive yet cause its sweet, is telling you that she is going to drive her own her and on the highway.

the song "Afraid",its cool cause it kind of remind me of things, is asking you a question on why is she so afraid to break down and lose her heart again.

the song "Promise", i like it cause it has to do with promise and freedom, is like someone that wants to be free and promise herself that and she is nobody.

the song "Whatever Will Be", i think its great cause it tells me whatever will be is that, is telling that whatever will be will be and no one know what a shooting star will do

the song "Rather Be With You", i love it after the first song cause its cool and awsome, is telling that she will be with you and you're everthing and you're the one that's right for her.

the song "Psychic", its ok from my point of view but i like more love and romance songs but its great when you not felling good, are friends that is telling her things and where she stands and how does she knows.

the song "Lose Your Love", i like it cause thats what i did once! lol so it's good, is about the person that you use to love is long gone but she doesn't want to lose your love.

ok thats my summary of each song and the parts with commas are where i gave my opinion. i took parts form the song to put it together so you can see how the lyric are like. well i hope that my summary and point of view helped you and you will want to buy this EXTREAM awsome album "V" sung by the greatest singer ever Vanessa Anne Hudgens.

now in the beggining of the cd u hear "come back to me" a very over exposed song but theres a reason its very catchy even with the sometimes silly lyrics
the song"let go" is a very catchy with some preety true lyrics its obviously one of her best personally i think that at least

"say ok " is a very frustraiting song where sometimes u feel like u want to go to the song writers house and personally punch them.....but the chorus does save the song from true horror

"never underestimate a girl" starts a little weird but in the first verese she picks it up..twords the chorus she gets a little kidish but overall its a preety good song

"lets dance" starts with a good beat and great vocals .....but her voice starts to sound electronic and muffled and the bass is way to loud, with no designated chourus its a little to creepy sounding for my taste

"drive" starts a little emo like but turns very insprirational
the overall theme of the song is very little kidish but the inspriratinal chorus save the song TOTALLY and is actully preety good song (with very good vacals at the end)

"AFraid" is seriuosly one of her best ever, her insprirational words and soothing beat truly hit a nerve and even tho she kinda losses her voice twords the lower notes she very great in this song

"promise" is kinda like "afraid" in the theme and in overall beat ...but her words are just as powerfull and make u put it on repeat for a long time ...though her words are a little odd her chorus and bridge, the song is WONDERFULL

"whatever will be" is reportedly vanessa's faveriote , shes got some good lyrics and preety good vocals...while the chorus"whatever will be, will be"is kind of confusing shes very good overall..tho stronger in the beggining than the end, shes still pulls it off

"Rather be with you " has a pop rock feel & is preety easy to listen to it's not at her best but definitly not her worst. her words are a little silly but over all the GREAT guitar chords really set this on fire

"physic" has a techno pop feel with some R&B undertones she sings very small<
"lose your love" has a hip hop vibe twords the middle, while she proves she can pull it off shes very " only OK"...not really standing out in this type of music ...on her album this is great and overall a solid efort and very nice to listen to

overall a very good album i like that she dabbled into all types of music and sometimes i wish there were more "high school musical " esque songs but she proves she can really do ALL kinds of music and i think that does set her apart as a VERY talented artist

I was reading the reviews and I saw that she swears. I like to buy "clean CDs" when possible. So, I researched the lyrics before I bought this for my 7-year old daughter. I was shocked that the bad word was "HELL". I am laughing that you are all so upset over the word "HELL". They hear worse on regular TV!! Or the school yard. Or from you! We should just be glad that is the worst word on her CD. I am now buying this and will be giving it to her for Christmas. Seriously people ... you almost deterred my purchase. Glad I looked up what this "profanity" was.

5 out of 5 stars JUST 'SAY OK' AND BUY VANESSAS ALBUM!!   October 28, 2006

this is truely a really great album, each song adds something to the album, theyre all really great. heres a lowdown on each track:

    01. COME BACK TO ME - the lead single for the album, everyone knows this one. its fun, catchy, great story behind it. V sounds amazing on this.

    02. LET GO - said to be the next single. I Think everyone can relate to this, just about wanting to have a little fun, and party, and jsut let everything go.

    03. SAY OK - great mellow, chilled out song. V's vocals sound absoultly BEAUTIFUL on this track, and the lyrics are amazing

    04. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A GIRL - great fast pased song. four words. TRUE GIRL POWER ANTHEM! (haha)

    05. LET'S DANCE - one of my personal favorites, great beat...this NEEDS to be a single..i think itd be awsome if they remixed this track and put a rapper on it give it a real hip hop vibe.

    06. DRIVE - the title pretty much says what this song is good for. haha, try it, driving in your car with this song blasting and the windows rolled down.

    07. AFRAID - great ballad, this song belongs in a movie, it would have been perfect for a soundtrack to a really dramatic romance movie.

    08. PROMISE - great beat on this song. Vanessa sounds beautiful on the verses, and the lyrics are amazing..i love her shout out to Mariah Carey on this one! ('I'll Be Tumbling down, but like MC,Shake It Off')

    09. WHATEVER WILL BE - the lyrics to this song are again so good, Vanessa sounds so good on slow songs, her voice is just so pretty

    10. RATHER BE WITH YOU - one of those real sing along kinda songs, really fun track

    11. PSYSIC - good song, but its kinda childish..the lyrics are again really good..it jsut the beat is very kinda 2nd gradeish poppy. doesnt really fit my girl V.

    12. LOSE YOUR LOVE - great way to close up the album V's voice is really nice on this one, and i love the clapping at the beginning of this song

    THE BONUS TRACKS! :: the bonus tracks are all really good, i bought 3 copies of the cd jsut to get all the bonus songs..theyre all worthy of being on all editons of the CD;;

    13. DRIP DROP - WALMART EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACK - great beat, the lyrics are great, really good

    13. TOO EMOTIONAL - BEST BUY EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACK - honestly, this beat kinda sounds like it belongs in a spy movie haha, but its a really good song, very different, and the lyrics are great

    13. DON'T TALK - TARGET EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACK (ONE) - i feel like ive heard this one before..anyway its really good, V sounds different on this one, but its still real good

    14. MAKE YOU MINE - TARGET EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACK (TWO) - okay, this song is THE BEST SONG VANESSA HAS EVER RECORDED,SHE SOUNDS AMAZING ON IT, ITS GOT A GREAT BEAT AND THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING. this should have not only been on all versions of the cd, but it should have been the lead take off single instead of 'Come Back To Me'..no joke, it really is that good

so anyway, over all this album is worth buying. All songs are great, and the bonus's at certiain retailers are also very good.
