| Customer Reviews: Highly Original and Enjoyable May 2, 2007 Jay Young (Austin, TX USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't remember how I stumbled on "Mass in Blue," but I'm glad I did. The title work is the setting of the traditional 6movement mass structure in Latin. At first, it might not seem like a good idea, but it works amazingly well, and is profoundly respectful of the texts. Jazz enthusiasts will recognize a wide range of styles here, from gospel to blues to ballad. Mass in Blue was commissioned by Hertfordshire Chorus and received its World Premiere at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on Saturday 12 July 2003 with Will Todd at the piano.
The remaining tracks on the CD are somewhat more conventional, but beautiful. If you enjoy Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre's music, then you will like tracks 7-12. I personally didn't care for the last 2 tracks much (Lighting the Way and Every Stone Shall Cry), but that's not enough to diminish the CD as a whole. This is a must-have for choral music fans looking for something both original and beautiful.
