5 out of 5 stars Exclusive LUIRE Selections of Aaliyah's Hits   September 28, 2009
    *badgirl* (M-I-A)
The Japanese Magazine Luire follows fashion and culture -including music. This album is an exclusive selection of Aaliyah's hits compromised of 20 tracks from all her different albums. It's elegant outer cover slip case and gorgeous artwork on disc and inner booklet in case are a true devotion to the love Aaliyah spread throughout the world-in Japan and all over the globe. The music is nicely arranged to include many fan favorites as well as rarities that stood out from many of the other releases. The Japanese devoted this exclusive "Eternal Selection" as classic, timeless, masterpiece tracks along a classy exclusive "magazine" type look to bring Aaliyah's beauty both from within and out to the *spotlight*. It's not only an eternal selection but a treasure to cherish!

The tracks are mixed from the albums Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, One in a Million, Aaliyah, and I Care 4 U. Every song is excellent providing the listener with no filler, monotonous beats, or boring bland sounds. Timbaland, and Missy Elliott's production is extremely present in the majority of the tracks as they were part of Aaliyah's team on the second and third albums. While R. Kelly was only on the first album, he does have a few songs. The vibe throughout the entire listening is laid back R&B, soft on the ears singing, luscious ballads, and heartfelt singing from Aaliyah. The music has unbelievable production by key players expanding the overall projection of the experience. Featured artists include DMX, Static, and Timbaland.

The track that truly touched me was, "The One I Gave My Heart To". The way Aaliyah sings the melody so heartfelt just made me feel it. Her words, "How could that one I gave my world to throw my world away... How could the one I was true to just tell me lies, how could the one I gave my heart to break this heart of mine?..." It's her inflections, her tone, and the way she elevates and lowers as if she herself is experiencing it. The video is SO SO beautiful and I wish they would officially release it on DVD. The music and words are from Diane Warren. It's like one of those Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, or Brandy songs that just touch deeply.

To name my true top selection is the song "I Care 4 U". When I hear it I can sense the words, feel the energy, and relate to it. The singing is also very much highlighted with effortless styles thus bringing the aura that it's Aaliyah's natural personality to care for her guy. It's not some lines that she sings given to her but "her" heart that pours out through her vocals projecting even more beauty to it.

Aside, those beautiful ballads there were a huge amount of tracks I loved. To narrow it down I will just put the ones the jumped out on me. "At Your Best" brings out Aaliyah's vocal purity quite eloquently. It's a huge stand-out song with rhythm and blues along Aaliyah at her best. It sparkles and creates a quality of singing like I've never heard in Aaliyah. She has the ability to show different projections and this just highlights her elegant side. And for some reason, "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" is what initially drew me to Aaliyah as a fan at first. Her innocent tone, soft soothing vocals are different from the majority of her other songs. The words of the song are also nice as I feel age has nothing to do with love. She manages to move forward the message that love is strong enough to make age stand as just a number. Love is pure, beautiful, and seductive at the same time. Her intonations once again seem extremely felt. It's one of those songs that embrace harsh realities. So many people stuck on the concept that you need to be with someone the same age--but as the song says, "Age ain't nothing but a number." Age, race, nationality, none matters but the intensity of the love. This song portrays that extremely well. It's a younger Aaliyah marked with innocence, purity, but extreme seduction.

"Are You Feelin' Me?" would have to be a top choice selection for my life-style at this point. It's a great single's song. Timbaland is a master of sounds definitely portraying quite a splash of beats catchy, infectious, and head bobbing. It's bouncy, funky, and very dance friendly. When Timbaland steps in the magic intensifies bringing the vibe totally hot. His "unique" drums, vocals, along Aaliyah's is true art; a chemistry revealed through the music. I've heard Timbaland with so many music artists and none can compare to this. It's absolute magic. The beats, the singing, and overall. "We Need A Resolution" also has the same effect but infuses Middle Eastern vibes thus reinforcing how Aaliyah wanted a slightly more mature sound with some edginess and sensuality at the same time.

"Rock The Boat", "Try Again" and "Miss You" are the last 3 tracks definitely ending in the strongest marks. "Try Again" won best video [a very happy time in Aaliyah's life shared with her brother Rashad on that day], "Miss You" is a huge beauty not only for the singing, words and meaning but for the fact fans, family and friends later dedicated it for her, and "Rock The Boat" was the last video song she did. It's a Caribbean vibe definitely refreshing, exotic, and of the islands. The words are sensual yet not overtly.

Overall, the music is extremely well produced with much Timbaland effects along catchy infectious beats that are never outdated or dull. Aaliyah's soft singing is like a delicate rose that softly echoes and evokes much love, warmth, and sensuality all in one. It's soothing, therapeutic, and like a release of stress, daily agonies, and just relaxation comparable to a bubble bath, back massage, or a warm embrace from someone you love. It's genuine, pure, and classic!
