good stuff November 9, 2008 Brett Iwamoto (Hawaii) a couple swan songs, if you will. skycamefalling never did dabble in this type of melodic singing that was only hinted on their lone full length. while most people would think of singing in metalcore to be wretched, it really accentuated the 'heaven/hell' moments on this disc. one thing to note, chris (the screamer) did all the vocals on this disc, including ALL the singing parts, leaving cameron to concentrate on his guitar playing. if you appreciate skycamefalling for their instrumentals, you will feel right at home, yet it's too bad they couldn't realize their full potential since breaking up. i was hoping for a full length.
Should Be A 4.5 Star, But I Just Can't October 27, 2006 Shogun (TheCityThatNeverSleeps, FL) I rarely give Ep's five stars anymore. Most are just too short to be considered worthy of the rating. But when I finally saw Skycamefalling's final EP available on Amazon, I knew that no rating except this would be suitable. If you're familiar with the name Skycamefalling, then I'm sure you already know that they were one of the most talented bands to come out of the new emotional hardcore scene which starting taking off around 1999. They were easily one of the most innovative (for their time) groups the genre has ever seen. In 2003 the band decided to part ways, but not before unleashing one eponymous final ep, this self-titled effort, on the public. And it's a shame that this was their final output as these two songs were easily the most creative and outstanding songs the band ever wrote. Alas another band that came to pass long before their time, but Skycamefalling does not deserve to be forgotten. Although this final self-titled only contains two songs, this is an essential purchase to anyone who has even the slightest interest in this band. Like I said, these are probably the two best songs Skycamefalling ever wrote. It feels like a really cruel joke for the band to have given us this EP, and then simple disbanded, but in the end you have to ask yourself, would you have rather never heard these songs? I guarantee that you answered that question with a No. I'm the same way. Although it's disappointing listening to this and thinking that their next full length could have sounded like this, I simply love these two songs. First of all Cameron's backing vocals are brought to the front of the music (although they were done beautifully on the self-titled, where they had a haunting effect, having them equally important as Chris's screams is wonderful) and the vocals of Cameron and Chris are almost equally balanced. It seems that this is almost always the downfall of all melodic hardcore bands who feature two vocalists, because it eventually becomes lopsided in one's favor. However Skycamefalling gave the impression they were fully capable of using (and using well I might add) both of their vocalists. John and Cameron's guitar playing was outstanding, and they utilize everything from their shattering, dissonant guitar chords that were prominent on "10.21" to a lot of subtle melody and soft sections. Although there's no piano on the disc, there is a beautiful acoustic section in the middle of "The Elephant Graveyard," something which is hard to accomplish. The rhythm section (which was completely different this time around), is just as impressive as their predecessors. The bass is very prominent during the soft sections and accents the mood, and the drums carry the rhythm of both songs fully, whether they're crashing or molding calm passages. All this combined (the beautiful lyrics, the wonderful vocals and the crushing instrumentation) easily set Skycamefalling well above your standard emotional hardcore band. I cannot say enough good things about these two final songs. Skycamefalling were one of my personal favorite hardcore band's of the early 00's and it is such a shame that they never made anymore music. I know most fans like myself are still hoping for a reunion in the future, but the possibilities seem very unlikely. In any case this self titled EP, along with "10.21" and "To Forever Embrace The Sun" all deserve places in your cd collection. Quite possibly one of the two best bands who arose from this movement, it's important to not forget them now that they are gone. Hopefully by listening to this, you won't.
