Essential is right January 7, 2007 21 out of 24 found this review helpful
Sure, there are more than a few Elvis anthologies out there and, yes, there is nothing on this set that isn't readily available on a few hundred other compilations, but this one is noteworthy in its own way, and a great collection as well. Focusing less on hits than on great performances, "Essential Elvis" gathers a handful of Sun sides, the best of his early RCA output and acclaimed sides from throughout his career. You get the best of Elvis' many hits as well as critically-acclaimed album tracks ("Reconsider Baby", "Trouble", the live "Polk Salad Annie"), and that, for once, is a unique concept in Elvis reissues. Everyone will have differing opinions on what should or shouldn't have been included, and tob sure sure some great tracks have been left out, but this is a whale of a great collection of "essential" Elvis.
Essential Music From The Best January 3, 2007 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
If you were stranded on an island and could only take one Elvis cd with you this would be the perfect one. There is not a bad song on this cd and it is a good and pleasant listening mix of all of his music. You get the blues, rock, rockabilly, gospel, movies, and some live concert music. One of the best arrangements of songs of all the cds that have been released since his untimely death. If you grew up listening to Elvis music it will bring back so many memories and if you are just getting acquainted with his music you will be pleased and will build happy memories. Not a bad price.Buy it,play it once and you will not want to play anything else for a long time. You will be hooked. This cd brings to mind what all the fuss was about.
The music is great, of course - but why do we need another greatest hits when so many are out there? January 6, 2007 12 out of 20 found this review helpful
Just a few years ago, "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" was released on CD. It contains roughly the same number of tracks as "Essential Elvis" does, and most of the tracks here are available on that compilation.
There have been very, very many Elvis "best-ofs" released over the past few decades - some available through stores, others often available through infomercials by companies licensing the music.
I guess my point is this: they're re-releasing this stuff every other year because they know they can milk Elvis' back catalog for all its worth and people will keep on buying. I work at an album store and the day of release I had numerous requests for this. Meanwhile, Elvis: 30 #1 Hits is still just as good.
If you don't have any Elvis Best-Ofs, this is a worthy purchase. If you own any, though, I wouldn't say it's worth dishing out for again. I really wish they'd stop re-releasing greatest hits compilations a million times for Elvis, because it's getting ridiculous.
Someone Is Gettin Rich Here January 7, 2007 12 out of 25 found this review helpful
When I saw this on the shelf at Wal-Mart, I thought..."Here we go again...another greatest hits collection." All of these songs have been released time and time again in various other collections. A few years ago when Elv1s 30 #1 Hits came out, I bought it. A few years later 2nd to None came out and I bought that. HOWEVER, HitStory arrived, I was shocked to see it being nothing more than the previous 2 collections sold with a new CD. Why would I spend money on CDs I already have? This is not to say that the King's music is not important...IT IS THE BEST. But why spend money on something you already own?
Why?? January 10, 2007 9 out of 14 found this review helpful
I'll not spend time reviewing the songs we all know them well. I'm here to answer the question as to why another greatest hits collection??
1. This is the Elvis entry in Sony's fine "Essential" series. Certainly Elvis merits representation.
2. Not everyone owns the other hits collections mentioned in other reviews. New fans "discover" Elvis all the time.
