Amazon.com Their multiple piercings, shaved heads, and abundant tattoos have them labeled a punk band, but on their fourth album, Good Charlotte--led by twin brothers Joel (lead vocals) and Benji (lead guitar) Madden--fall much more under the umbrella of 1970s arena rock and mainstream ballads. There is the occasional foray into the pop-punk mode of previous records, including the distorted-vocal rap "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" and "Broken Hearts Parade," which sounds like Green Day with horns. It's easy to see the maturation in the Maddens' songwriting on such tracks as "The River," a surveillance of the inner workings of Los Angeles, the grass-is-greener pop song "Something Else," and "Where Would We Be," a break-up ballad about Joel Madden's split with pop princess Hilary Duff. With a piano lead and strident chorus, Madden admits, "Now I must confess that I'm a sinking ship/And I'm anchored by the weight of my heart." Browbeaten in theory, like sister songs "Misery," "Victim of Love," and "Break Her Heart," Good Morning Revival offers hints of optimism that grow with the record and reach the summit with the closing pop song, "March On." The harmonic chorus jubilantly declares, "Like soldiers we can make it through the night/We'll see the sun/March on." Whether punkers or mainstream rockers, it's apparent that Good Charlotte will continue the march. --Scott Holter

Long Time Fan March 28, 2007 17 out of 25 found this review helpful
I really loved the first album. It was a lot of fun, upbeat and really rocked in spots. The Chronicles album was just terrible for me. I'm all for change, but the album just didn't have the energy. With a name like Good Morning Revival I was hoping for a return to the roots of their music. Sadly I don't think this does. The songs are flat and have non of the pop punk energy. I don't hear any stand out singles that will hit the radio and propel this one to big sales. Hopefully if this one does worse than the last, the band will realize what people really want to hear from them. I really want to stay a fan.
A SMALL STEP FOR MUSIC...A GIANT LEAP FOR GOOD CHARLOTTE March 27, 2007 12 out of 20 found this review helpful
My first exposure to Good Charlotte was when their first CD had just come out and they were running a promotion with a teenage fashion chain that I had taken my then 16 year old niece to buy her a birthday present. From then on I considered them to be trendy pretty boy punk poseurs with hearts of pure pop - second rate Blink 182, third rate Green Day. Well "Good Morning Revival" has changed my opinion. Just as "American Idiot" took Green Day to a new level, this new CD has elevated Good Charlotte's status from wannabe to full fledged, fully developed rock stars. Chris Daughtry stand aside Good Charlotte has arrived. Starting with the introductory "Good Morning Revival" the band shows that they're no longer your teenaged niece's Good Charlotte. Featuring confident vocals, strong playing and near flawless songwriting, Good Charlotte has grown up and delivers the goods. With a diversity of songs exploring their dark side ("Misery," "The River," "All Black" and "Broken Hearts Parade"), their romantic side ("Where Would We Be" and "A Beautiful Place") and even their optimistic side (who knew) with the CD closer "March On," Good Charlotte shows that they can outdo current hipster hype stars like Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and The Killers. And they should have the opportunity to prove it to the world as "Good Morning Revival" has several potential strong singles such as "Victims Of Love," "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" with its processed vocal and two songs that carry the power of early Police "Something Else" and "Dance Floor Anthem." Even brats have to grow up and I apologize to the members of Good Charlotte for underestimating them. If they continuing leaping forward like they have with this CD they might have to change their name from Good Charlotte to Great Charlotte. Don't take my word - listen for yourself and you be the judge.
This Band Has an Identity Problem March 27, 2007 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I wanted to like this record, I really honest to God did. I got excited when I heard it was coming out soon, but upon listening to it I am very dissapointed.
To sum things up, Good Charlotte don't know who they are anymore. It's one thing to experiment different genres, and it's another to completely rip off other bands and pretend it's your own. Track 6, Victims of Love, takes its pre-chorus melody straight from Tatu's mega hit "Not Gonna Get Us". Listen to the song around 40 seconds into it and you'll see what I mean. Closing song, "March On" rips the lead guitar riff from the Killers' recent hit "All These Things That I've Done", and most blatant of all is how they rip off Coldplay. Track 7, "Where Would We Be", uses the exact same piano riff as Coldplay's monster hit "Clocks" does for the chorus. Track 10, "Beautiful Place", is a direct plagarism on "Beautiful World". There is no difference in the music, and the chorus, "We live in a beautiful place" is a direct copy on "We live in a beautiful world."
There is some truly original stuff in here (unless I'm missing something) like Broken Hearts Parade, and the River, but it's not enough to cover up the fact that Good Charlotte sounds confused and desperate for success. Bringing the guys from Avenged Sevenfold on board for the River - easily the best song on here - shows that they are trying to regain their rock credibility, but the fact that of the matter is that "Good Morning Revival" is not much of a rock record. It leans way more towards brit pop. This band just doesn't know who they are. On the track "Misery" Joel complains about "plastic" and "shallow" people, yet he is dating Nicole Richie - how hypocritical is that. The arrival of Good Morning Revival is a sad day for Good Charlotte because they've become everything that people pegged them as - wannabes and cheap rip offs. Sorry guys, but this band has become the Kevin Federline of Rock 'N Roll.
What a waste of money!! April 1, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I hate saying this as a HUGE Good Charlotte fan but their new album is just a major waste of money. Their first album is one of my top five albums of all time, but this one sucks. The songs are all dance pop synthesized junk. No real guitars, no messages to any of the songs, no nothing. I dont know if Joel is just too busy running around town with Nicole Richie or what but they skipped out on this album. The only redeaming song is The River, on which they colaberated with M Shadows and Synester Gates of Avenged Sevenfold. I hate hate hate to say it but dont waste your money or time on this one, just listen to the first album and remember what a great band they used to be.
Long time fan & I say this is their BEST YET. April 19, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I love the new sound & direction GC took with this album. The thing people need to realise is that life isn't all about labels. They never claimed to be punk or anything like that, they are just themselves. Deal with it. They're not going anywhere.
Now onto the album review. Joel's voice sounds amazing on every song & the lyrics are really great. I think this is their best album yet, lyrically & musically. The best songs IMO are Broken Hearts Paradge, The River, Misery, Victims of Love, Where Would We Be Now...they are all really great. So if you want a great record to relate to & dance to...this is for you.
