In the most dignified way possible, "Dignity"--the title track to this fizz-bomb of a dance-pop disc--sends a disgusted eye-roll and a flagrant puh-lease to underwear-eschewing celebutantes everywhere: "You'd show up to the opening of an envelope," sings Duff, who hangs onto her signature sweetness despite having entered full-on diss mode. "It's not news when you've got a new bag/It's not news when you're looking your best/Come on, give it a rest." Well said. And sung. Not that calling out the phony and the full of it is what Duff, or Dignity, is all about. Mostly, the disc is a beat-studded chronicling of an incredibly healthy 19-year-old psyche: On "Happy," she's happy despite an ex's attempts to make her miserable; on "With Love"--maybe her catchiest, most grown-up song to date--she's willing to accept rejection as long as kindness plays a role in its delivery. Musically, with the help of groove-conscious producers like Tim & Bob and Will.i.am, Duff edges ever closer to adult sensibilities; her goofball Lizzie McGuire days seem far behind. It's an evolution anybody could have seen coming, actually. Has there ever been a starlet with her head on straighter? --Tammy La Gorce

    Album Description
Dignity isn't for sale. It comes from within. Hilary Duff has always carried herself with dignity, from her 2001 TV debut starring in "Lizzy McGuire," through big screen hits like "Cinderella Story" and "Cheaper by the Dozen," to her career as a multi-platinum recording artist, with more than 13 million albums sold to date. Now Hilary brings her customary class and splash to her new Hollywood Records CD "Dignity. At 19, Hilary has matured into a sophisticated singer and songwriter. Hilary has co-written all the songs on 'Dignity', always aiming high and ultimately creating an album of depth and consequence. To realize her vision for the new CD, she teamed with Grammy-Award winning Kara Dioguardi ( Gwen Stefani, Pussy Cat Dolls, Enrique Iglesias, Kelly Clarkson), as well as top producer/songwriters like Chico Bennett & Richard Vission (Madonna, Usher, Killers), Tim & Bob (Nas, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez), Vada Nobles (Rhianna, Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, Natasha Bedingfield, Warren G), Fredwrecke (Snoop Dog, Eminem, Fergi) Will.I.Am and Rhett Lawrence. In the title track, she talks about her experiences and observations of living in Los Angeles ("Where's your dignity/I think you lost it in the Hollywood Hills"). "Danger" explores the suspect advances of an older man, while "With Love" turns the world's most common song topic upside down. ("I can take your honesty/All your words weigh heavily/I'm listening to you all the time"). The song 'Stranger' reveals a relationship that is picture perfect in public, but cold behind closed doors. With every track, Hilary probes life and love more intensely, and with more vulnerability than she has before. This is the deluxe CD/DVD version which includes 9 music videos.

3 out of 5 stars Duff Does Derivative Dance   April 3, 2007
33 out of 48 found this review helpful

Avoiding the trappings of bland teen-pop and artistic pretensions that plagued her first albums, Hilary Duff has found a new home in straight-up dancefloor confections on "Dignity." Her "voice" is still nothing to speak of; even at 19 she sounds immature and cartoonish, doubtlessly aided by multi-tracked computers, and the subject matter is tailor-made for the youthfully self-absorbed. However, the album has something going for it.

Much like her naïve but sometimes well-crafted (thanks to writing/producing team The Matrix) debut LP "Metamorphosis," "Dignity" benefits from a degree of sonic merit. The production is too loud, and the melodies are a little weak - but somehow most of the songs make the grade, especially considering that Duff's targeted demographic is hardly looking for the next "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

Lead single "With Love," inching its way toward the Top 40, for example, is a flighty, energetic little slice of danceable fluff. Its hook is hard to detect and its choruses repetitive - much like the rest of the record, no song particularly begs to be played multiple times. Indeed, the beats may pulse with a welcome frenetic energy and high BPM, but she poses no threat to established club favorites. Madonna can breathe easy.

Speaking of Madonna, the one true downfall of the album is that it is an unabashedly derivative affair all across the board. There is nothing wrong with an homage or two, but "Dignity" not only dares to move the line but then crosses it anyway. It is probable that Duff was listening to Gwen Stefani and Kylie Minogue records to find a template for her delivery. Stefani in particular is channeled in tracks like "Danger" and "No Work, All Play," a fun, breezy standout. "Gypsy Woman" sounds just like Minogue's "Red-Blooded Woman," and "Never Stop," would be a clone of Madonna's "Can't Stop" if two decades worth of technological advances were peeled away.

Despite her unoriginality, Duff remains a far better role model for young people than most. The self-sufficient "Happy" for instance, is the perfect musical accompaniment for a teenage girl's first terrible breakup, and "Outside of You" criticizes superficiality, particularly how it tends to get in the way of a genuine, loving connection. The title track also lambastes media harlots Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan unflinchingly. "Where is your dignity? I think you lost it in the Hollywood hills," she sings over a dizzying smorgasbord of bubbly beats.

Still, it is hard to not to balk as she points her finger and criticizes that "money makes the world go `round," for there has been no better-marketed mass media personality this side of the 20th century than Duff herself. Also, "Danger" cheaply exploits ex-boyfriend Joel Madden (of the pop/punk band Good Charlotte), and "Dreamer" smatters of egotistical self-righetousness: "Oh you're such a dreamer/But I'm not a believer/In all the things that you dream/Stop watchin' me/Stop watchin' me." Boys, you can't have her.

It may not be memorable or have any artistic merit - Duff's detractors will go right on detracting - but in and of itself "Dignity" is an inoffensive, mildly enjoyable pop record. Far better than her past attempts, it has the ingredients for a prime guilty pleasure of 2007.

The deluxe version includes a host of music videos and an interview.

4 out of 5 stars Effervescent electronic pop   April 12, 2007

Don't be fooled by that sultry over-the-shoulder cover photo - Hilary Duff's third studio album bubbles with enthusiastic electro-pop rhythms that would inspire even hardened couch potatoes to take a turn on the dance floor.

First single "Play With Fire" is about a young woman who has gotten over a break-up, and has just encountered the former object of her affection. Though not the best song on the album, it has an infectious '80s style chorus which makes up for a slightly monotonous vocal performance. Second single "With Love" is another '80s retro track and is strictly for dancing, but all is forgiven with the third single "Stranger", which has an unusual Eastern influenced beat running through it. "Stranger" mixes up the rhythms and allows Duff to show a little more range, and the lyrics are also much better than the first two singles. The song is about a couple who appear perfect in public, but this image quickly dissipates when they are alone.

And now for the rest of the album -

The title track is a wickedly funny take on the young publicity-hungry starlets, hotties and heiresses doing the entertainment circuit, and is one of my favorite songs on this album. "Danger" is another track with an Eastern influence, but although I like the beat, the lyrics make me feel really old. (The song is about dating an older man, who was born in 1974 - this makes me archaic) "Gypsy Woman" is about a woman who breaks up a family, a short track which leads into the bouncy "Never Stop", a disco number reminiscent of "Knock on Wood".

The slower paced "No Work No Play" didn't do it for me, but I like how she does the chorus lines - "Let the clouds roll in and fill the sky / Get that melancholy feeling inside". "Between You and Me" is just more of the same old, same old, except for that "oompah oompah" tuba bit, and the intro for "Dreamer" (a song about a stalker) sounds just a bit Paris Hilton in delivery. "Happy" doesn't really come over that way, but it's about a girl getting over a bad relationship and feeling much better about herself. Rounding out the album are "Burned", "Outside of You" (the only song not co-written by Duff, with Pink and Chantal Kreviazuk doing the honors), and "I Wish".

An enjoyable, danceable, guilty pleasure album that you should buy for a teenager and borrow every once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars America's savior for pop music!   March 29, 2007

I never thought I'd be so excited for an album from Hilary Duff. Don't get me wrong, I always liked her, and secretly watched Lizzie McGuire on TV (my secret shame!) a few years ago.. I was already 20 years old - and a guy. I love pop music, and it really hasn't been a presence here in the past 5 years or so. Everything is RnB-tinged, or has a hip-hop flare. To go back to more POPPY sounds, it's categorizing it as "Dance" music now, but whatever gets it out there, I don't care.

Anyway, Hilary Duff has single handedly transformed herself into the American Kylie Minogue (plus she kinda looks like her now too...) starting with Beat of My Heart off her last album. Who knew it would continue on to her next single Play With Fire which topped it. Then she did it again with With Love. To keep it rolling, Dignity is a STELLAR dance/pop album with 14 great tracks! Yes, all 14! I don't know how she does it. Every song is likeable, if not loveable from first listen. Last time a pop album grabbed me so strongly from first listen was 1996/1997(in the US) debut album from the Spice Girls.

Hilary, if you can keep this up, you've earned a new fan, and I will be buying this record in stores on April 3rd just to support you. And if you go on tour - make it fabulous and sing live! Thanks!

    1 out of 5 stars BEWARE   June 10, 2007

Its unfortunate that I can't enjoy this CD on my I-Pod. The enhanced features prevent me from downloading the songs onto my computer. BEWARE!!! Do not buy the CD if you plan to download the songs onto your computer, because its likely that you'll experience difficulties and I'd rather you avoid the misery I've been placed in. You would think that Hollywood Records would have learned from the Sony Music debacle.

    5 out of 5 stars Kylie Minogue + Madonna + Cher = HILARY DUFF!   April 11, 2007
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

Hilary Duff's new album "Dignity" is a well-made, superior CD, comparable to Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor", Kylie Minogue's "Fever" and Rachel Stevens' "Come And Get It". The good news is, its better than all the above. The best news is, its an instant pop classic, right up there with Madonna's "Ray of Light" and Aaliyah's "One in a Million".

Wow. I never expected anything from this CD. At best, I am an on-again, off-again Hilary fan, as she does have some really great singles ("Come Clean" and "Fly" - which in my opinion are two pop miracles), and some really weak, boring ones ("So Yesterday", "The Girl can Rock").

What a surprise then, that Hilary has totally abandoned the pop-rock genre, and has totally embraced the electronica/trance genre instead. At its best, "Dignity" sounds like a classy European ambient electronica album (it really does - DJs across the world will have a LOT to sample from this CD), and at its' worst, it reminds me of a Dannii Minogue record (which is not at all a bad thing).

The album opener "Stronger" is a brilliant way to start off any record. In fact, I think Kylie can learn a thing or two from her.

"With Love", the first single is a trancey-loopy pop song that will be stuck in your head for ages. The great thing about this album, is that it is the perfect REPEAT VALUE CD - you WILL be reaching out for it years down the line, and for that reason alone you should get it.

I would also like to say that I find this to be the best pop music release so far this year, and its solid, reliable, and straightforward no-nonsense music. It also made me rethink my opinion of these 'manufactured' pop princesses. I think right now, Hilary Duff and Mandy Moore actually make QUALITY music and are great role models for young girls indeed.

In closing, consider this the sonic equivalent of Dannii Minogues' epic album "Neon Nights". This record sounds a lot like that one, and thats a GOOD thing.

If you loved the last CD by Madonna, and are a fan of Kylie Minogue in general, I urge you to get this gem of a CD.

Also, please note that I'm generally a fan of rock/indie music, so for me to rave about something in this genre is unusual - so take my word for it and get it!

Also, watch out for the track "Gypsy Woman" - what music!

    Five Stars. An Instant Classic.
