Don't be fooled...this album is great. May 18, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Natasha Bedingfield is back! Following the worldwide success of her debut album Unwritten, she is back with a new album titled N.B.
The album opens with the acoustic-funk pop track called "How Do You Do", this album's version of her hit song from her last album, "Single". The great chords and powerful vocals from Natasha make this one a surefire hit. The next song is already a hit, that being "I Wanna Have Your Babies", which has reached Top 20 in the UK, is the quirky kind of pop track Natasha is notable for. The album's most heart-wrenching ballad is track #3, "Soulmate". Rumored to be the next single, this song is like "I Bruise Easily" part two, only not much like the latter. The chords and melody of the song make it beautiful, and Tash's deliverance on the track is A+. "Who Knows", "Say it Again", and "Pirate Bones" all follow (in that order), and all are a little something different from her. Keeping the album fresh is what keeps the artist in the spotlight, and Tash has proved she can do that.
Next up is "Backyard", a song about the simplicity of childhood and wanting to hark back to those times of "cowboy hats and tutus". The track "Tricky Angel", one of my favorites, is next. This is a soulful pop song with a bit of an edge, and Natasha serves it up fresh on this one as well. On the subject of soulful, next is "When You Know You Know", a pure soulful upbeat ballad about love today. Following that amazing song is the interlude "I Think They're Thinking". "(No More) What Ifs" has haunting strings and pianos, making the song something different in a good way. Rapper Eve is featured on the track, and her verse is amazing. "Not Givin' Up" is a dance-style track that is easily one of my favorites from it. The song mixes pop and rock into dance production, making it a great listen. "Still Here" and "Smell the Roses", both ballads (the former more than the latter), close the album greatly and leave the album in a way that makes you wonder what will come out of Natasha's creative (albeit quirky) mind.
This album is great and I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
Well noted!! May 3, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
N.B. could either stand for Natasha Bedingfield's initials, or Note well!!! Her sophomore CD certainly makes one take note.
With a breathy excited vocal delivery, equally suited to her soul singer or rock chick personas, she returns with her catchy Brit pop.
Opening cut, the horn laden marching "How do you do" has her wanting to ask her guy out. Lead off single, the catchy (but bloke scaring) "I wanna have your babies" is cut from the same pop/hip hop fabric as her smash from her debut "These words".
"Who knows" is a lovely pop/rock song that wouldn't be out of place on a Pink CD.
Other standouts are the midtempo pop "(No more) what ifs" featuring a cameo from Eve, the delightful plodding synths of "Pirate bones" (with thumping pianos emphasizing the chorus), and the sparse guitar/percussion driven "Tricky angel".
Slowing things down, we have the delightful acoustic "Soulmate", "Backyard", the piano ballad "Still here" (which finds her soaring vocally), and the retro seventies sounding "When you know you know".
Musically, it's the same direction as her debut, but with even catchier songs. Great!!
Brilliant British Pop! May 3, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
In the 60's we had a British Rock invasion with Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Who and the Animals, right now it seems like the majority of British artists to make it in USA are Pop or Soul artists. Lilly Allen, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and ofcourse Natasha Bedingfield who had a smash hit worldwide with her debut album "Unwritten" and spawned a few memorable single hits aswell. Her debut album was a quirky cheerful pop masterpiece with funny playful lyrics about independence and single life of a young woman. Lyrics were just as good as the melodies/hooks and In my oppinion it was one of the best, if not the best Pop album of 2004. NB, which refers to her initials got a fair share of goodies aswell, but the themes are diffrent and rely more on finding Mr. Right and settle down. It's very well produced with good producers like Dr. Dre protege, Mike Elizondo and Timbaland protege Nate "Danja" Hills, but Steve Kipner appears again,(wrote several of her old hits) and so does Andrew Frampton. Adam Levine from Maroon 5 sing backround vocals on some songs, which is quite fascinating!. While this album got simularities with her debut, it focus further on production (and I must say it's really good) but not all songs have the greatest of hooks, but they grew on you nonetheless. Natasha Bedingfield is one of a kind with her natural and openminded attitute and ability to send out her feelings to the listener. Simply put, you knew her music when you hear it and hopefully you won't be too picky with her sophmore album.
"How Do You Do" a midtempo song with a catchy riff that goes on throughout the song is one of the best songs. The lyrics are really well penned and funny to listen to. I think it deals with finding Mr. Right like several others also do. First single "I Wanna Have Your Babies" is as straightforward as it can be, it's both quirky and catchy pop song that sound alot like her previous music. These are the kind of songs Natasha is suited best for. Rumoured second single "Soulmate" is a ballad and a very good one. The hook goes like this "Who doesn't long for someone to hold/who knows how to love you without being told/somebody tell me why I'm on my own/if there's a soulmate for everyone". Next song is called "Who Knows" and is another midtempo with good arrangements about being undecided if the relationship is the right for marriage or not. On "Say It" get's quite personal where Natasha admit she found the perfect one. Adam Levine sings backround vocals here, and it make me wonder if she's singing about him?. More about insecurity in "Pirate Bones" a decent midtempo again with elegant production.
A ballad called "Backyard" about how a relationship is turning sour and Natasha wish it could be like it used to be again, in the backyard. Funny lyrics on this one. "Tricky Angel" is an defenite highlight, with good beats and very good R&Bish hook. If there is a song to become a big hit in USA it's this one. Credits to the lyrics too, that are funny as always with methaphors. It's also about finding the right one "Tricky angel got me falling Without my consent/ And I'm so glad he did 'cause I didn't know you were heaven sent". "When You Know, You Know" is very soulish with elegant classic soul vibe and actually ends up with some acappella, not the average Bedingfield song but welcolmed, here she makes the best she can of her voice and the song is indeed diffrent. "No More (What If's) is also a potential crossover hit with Hip Hopish production and a cameo from Eve. "Not Givin Up" has the coolest production (from Danja) and sound alot like a mix between Pop and Techno, lyrics aren't the best but the song is catchy as hell. "Still Here" is a Diane Warren penned song, not too surprising it's a ballad huh?. The album closes with "Smell The Roses" more romanticism in ballad format.
Overall, regardless of what kind of songs you prefer Natasha Bedingfield to sing, I think this album is undeniably catchy. It may not be as instantly appealing like some of her music from "Unwritten" but it belongs to the quality music category with well penned, often very funny lyrics, fresh and elegant productions. Some songs lack the killer hooks but I think most songs are quite good with a few standouts that could become smash hits. If you liked her debut album, you probably know what kind of artists she is and you'll apreciate this album too, some people may even like this album better I think cause the lyrics are easy to relate to and personal. So far, one of the best pop albums of 2007 and recommended.
"NB" was releasd in Europe on April 30 but will not be released in USA til August, unless you want to get the import version available now.
Great find! December 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I caught one of the songs (turned out to be "Soulmate") on a TV show and quickly rewound it to write down the lyrics to later search for the song. I have heard the name before but didn't really know her music, except Unwritten. This album was a great surprise with the whitty lyrics and Natasha's great voice. It's a wonderful departure from the overprocessed pop music of these days. Some of the songs are funny, some serious, some just entertaining but overall great quality.
In a world filled with pretty girls......... July 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
....who try to sing, whose words you either can't understand, or wish you couldn't, Natasha is a breath of fresh air. A total joy. Sexy does NOT mean trashy; Natasha is sexy, clean, and a treasure. She comes from a background in Christian music, and the lessons have stuck....
This is [sort of] the Brit version of "Pocketful of Sunshine"...each album has songs the other doesn't. My own favorites are "I Wanna Have Your Babies" [yes, it's perfectly clean], "Soulmate" and the reprise of "Unwritten". Most of the songs are about relationships, but none of the problems are TOO bad. "Tricky Angel" is really novel, "Backyard" is catchy, and "Smell the Roses" is special, with a great message....
This is a wonderful record...pleasant, clear, voice...lyrics that never offend...rock, but not hard. If you don't know Natasha, you're missing out.....
