5 out of 5 stars I have been waiting for this since the glory days of Black Sabath!   May 22, 2007

This is one of the best Metal offerings of the last 30 years! Its both fresh and old school at once. Filled with both dread and hope, intensely personal, but never egotystical Ozzy opens up some very private trials and tribulations in his life and also expresses his concerns about the world we are leaving behind for our grandchildren, all in a very down to earth intelligent, not preachy manner that makes him seem like one of us rather than as if he sees himself as a saviour. Or some mega rock star messiah ... He always seems amazed at his own success and longevity. Very refreshing!

Musically it is solid, not overly produced , almost simple but still rocking relentlessly, plus Ozzy plays harmonica again... cool! It reminds me more of an early Sabbath offering than a solo Ozzy one, his footing seems more like that of a new artist offering his work to be judged than that of an icon resulting in a work of substance rather than fodder for fans who will accept the work on the name of the artist alone.

5 out of 5 stars "We've Been Together For A Long Long Time...."   May 23, 2007

Regardless of whether or not the lyrics are included in the disk (I have been deciphering Ozzy lyrics for about 30 years, back in the days when no albums ever came with lyrics...you learned the words by playing the songs over and over again), this CD is excellent. And whoever says this album is lower quality because it doesn't have all the plastic covers and other things to clutter up the landfills, get a life. Every artist should start thinking of using biodegradable products to package their disks in. Don't you think there is a message there? And don't forget the people who quickly label any song they don't like right off the bat as a "filler". Whatever. We all know what opinions are like, and that everyone has one.
On first listen, you might not realize what it is you are listening to, but once you listen again you begin to see how remarkable ozzy is and always has been. His message hasn't really changed over the years, but he has a way with putting a new twist on an old phrase....for example, the line "Cross my heart until I die" from the song "Lay your world on me". This song has the soul and sound to be as big a favorite as "Mama, I'm coming home".
There are some excellent concert quality songs, as well. Songs that have the pump to wire up a live audience, and songs that compell you to sing along.
Everybody is a critic these days. Ozzy is beyond their labels or categories. Ozzy is Ozzy, saying what he came to say and doing it in his own way. Some of the songs are a little harder than his earlier songs, one of them includes a harmonica, and several of them condemn the war. He has condemned war since his Black Sabbath days, and that message is still the same. In Civilize the Universe, he says "I'm alive, watching better turn to worse" and Black Rain asks "Why are the children all marching into the desert to die?"
If you love Ozzy, you probably suffered through some of his "Under Cover" album and wound up liking it anyway. This album is a serious album, with alot of thought behind it, intelligent lyrics, and definately something for everybody. If you are an Ozzy fan, you WILL LOVE this album. My 16 year old daughter, who does not particularly like Rock and Roll, has even found a couple favorites here. It's not that Ozzy is back, Ozzy has never been gone.
Buy this album, think for yourself and don't just follow along with what the person before you said about it. This one deserves 5 stars. Instead of thinking you are THE MUSIC EXPERT who speaks for everyone else, sit back, enjoy the music, and thank whatever god you believe in that Rock and Roll will never die.

    5 out of 5 stars This One's For John   May 23, 2007

Ozzy's music is ever changing just like those of us that have struggled along with him, trying to shine but struck down in our hearts by human greed and the uncaring ways towards one another that feed the true evil in this world.
One simple soul cries out and the judgement falls swiftly like a knife in the back while still others fall to their knees in the misguided following of fools.
I see his music for what I think is intended and in the short span of this life, for me it is something very special and rare.
Great album, always different with killer lyrics. And when the condescension builds in the fingers of the blind. Bring down the Black Rain . . .

5 out of 5 stars Ozzy Lives!   May 30, 2007

Okay, I first ordered this CD because I wanted first crack at the Ozzfest '07 tickets. I heard "I Don't Wanna Stop" on radio, got psyched, and even added it as my song on MySpace. I am a true Black Sabbath & Ozzy fan; together apart, reunited... it doesn't matter to me, it just sounds good. I've read a lot of negative reviews about Black Rain and I would like to answer these.

A lot of people say that only "Not Going Away", "I Don't Wanna Stop", & "Black Rain" are worth listening to. These are the best three songs on the album, but they are not the only good ones.

"The Almighty Dollar" starts with a minor Linkin Park sound and then slows down a little. This isn't a 'Heavy Metal' track, but you can definitely here the old Ozzy in it. Great musical accompaniment. "11 Silver" Starts with a good, quick beet that stays steady through out the song. It has good energy behind it and pumps the adrenaline. "Civilize the Universe" almost has a Techno-Rock sound at the beginning, but stabilizes back into a classic Ozzy sound. Good lyrics that match the music greatly. "Here For You" is a slower Ballad that has a certain strength to it that only Ozzy could provide. Definitely like the piano/keyboard in the background. "Countdowns Begun" has an amazing guitar intro that goes for a solid 50 seconds. When Ozzy chimes in it just sounds like a natural addition to the song. You can here the guitar pushing through the whole of the track. Finally, "Trap Door" has a good Metal energy. Solid lyrics with godd sounds effects worked in. Heavy Metal only listeners may not care for these tracks, but they all have great lyrics and musical accompaniment.

Has Ozzy's music softened a little? Yes, but all musicians must evolve in there creations to maintain a truly original sound like Ozzy does. Black Rain is a great Rock/Metal CD to add to any rockers library!

    4 out of 5 stars Black Rain - A Listener's Review   May 23, 2007

Sorry, can't give this album 5 stars. I've been an Ozzy fan since the 90's, bought all of his solo albums, most of the good Sabbath albums, been to a couple shows (near the front for one) and, in general, enjoy his music. Got really excited when I heard that he was coming out with a new album. Don't get me wrong, "Down to Earth" was good, but not "Ozzmosis" or "No More Tears" good (by the way, I consider Ozzy's albums with Randy to be incomparable). The first and second tracks pretty much summarize Ozzy's life: "Not Going Away" and "I Don't Wanna Stop". He may have to "go away" or "stop", eventually, but this album shows that he can still do an album. I agree with the other reviews that indicate Ozzy didn't do anything new for this album. But, then again, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I think we fans should ask ourselves: "Do we really want Ozzy to change?". How would we deal with Ozzy doing Hip-Hop or (ugghh) Country? Overall, there are quite a few good songs on this album ("Lay Your World on Me" is NOT one of them), some of the tracks even cover political issues which is OK. In conclusion, Ozzy, if you read this, please do us all one huge favor: Before you "go" or "stop", please create a couple of songs that are classics, you know, like "Crazy Train", "Diary of a Madman", "No More Tears", "Mr. Crowley", etc. Granted whatever album Ozzy puts out, I'll buy it because I'm a fan. P.S. While writing this review, "Black Rain"'s playing in the background.
