Amazon.com It's pretty clear, based on its title, that this movie is set in a restaurant, and it's even clearer that it's an Italian restaurant when you look at the soundtrack: Its bread and butter (or pasta and olive oil) is arias from Puccini and Verdi. And big arias they are, too--so well-known that they are opera's versions of chartbusting pop hits: Verdi's "La donna e mobile" from Rigoletto (in a recent rendition by young tenor Joseph Calleja); Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi and "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly (both sung by Renata Tebaldi). And, of course, Pavarotti serves up a couple of hearty main courses with "Cielo e mar" and "Nessun dorma." The Italian mood is also reflected in contributions from Paolo Conte (his Gypsy-swing and bilingual "Via Con Me") and Michael Buble's cover of the 1950s Latin pop hit "Sway" (which was popularized in the US by Dean Martin, born Dino Paul Crocetti--does that count as an Italian connection?). The album also includes three instrumental cues: Conrad Pope's "Truffles and Quail," and Philip Glass's low-key "Zoe and Kate Watch Video" and "Zoe Goes to the Restaurant." Liz Phair's "Count on My Love" inexplicably brings up the rear, but hey, it's a pretty great pop song (from Phair's underrated 2005 album Somebody's Miracle), so it's nice to see it get more exposure. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description ORIGINAL MUSIC WRITTEN BY ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE PHILIP GLASS ALSO INCLUDES SONGS PERFORMED BY LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, MICHAEL BUBLE, LIZ PHAIR AND MANY MORE! From Academy Award nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine), comes the new film NO RESERVATIONS, the remake of foreign film Mostly Martha. Master chef Kate Armstrong (Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones--Chicago) lives her life like she runs her kitchen at a trendy Manhattan eatery--with a no-nonsense intensity that both captivates and intimidates everyone around her. Kate's perfectionist nature is put to the test when she "inherits" her nine-year-old niece Zoe (Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin--Little Miss Sunshine), while contending with a brash new sous-chef who joins her staff. High-spirited and freewheeling, Nick Palmer (Golden Globe nominee Aaron Eckhart--Thank You For Smoking) couldn't be more different from Kate, yet the chemistry between them is undeniable. Warner Bros. presents NO RESERVATIONS opening wide on July 27th. The Decca soundtrack will be released on July 24th and features original music written by Academy Award nominee Philip Glass (Notes on a Scandal, The Hours, Kundun), mixed with Italian arias performed by Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, Joan Sutherland, Carlo Bergonzi and Joseph Calleja as well as contemporary songs performed by Michael Buble, Liz Phair, Paolo Conte and Ray Gelato.

This is an unique soundtrack July 29, 2007 Robert G Yokoyama (Mililani, Hawaii) 32 out of 35 found this review helpful
This is an unusual soundtrack. It combines instrumental music with opera music. This disc also has two songs from popular singers. I love the track "Sway" by Michael Buble. I also enjoyed the track "Mambo Gelato" These two tracks make me want to grab someone and dance. The opera tracks on this disc are excellent. The best of the bunch is "La Donna E Mobile" by Joseph Calleja. This track is very uplifting and playful. "Cielo E Mar" is a romantic sounding track from Pavarotti. "Nessum Dorma" is a really soothing track from Pavarotti too. He has such a powerful voice. Philip Glass is a talented composer for the film. I love his instrumental restaurant theme here. It is a beautiful piece of music. "Count On My Love" is a great song that fits the tone of the movie well. I really enjoyed listening to the music on this soundtrack.
Now it makes more sense... July 30, 2007 Mark Anderson (Utah, USA) 27 out of 34 found this review helpful
It appears that some of the most memorable score cues from the movie are actually from Mark Isham's soundtrack "Life As A House" (Listen to track 11 from "Life As A House" for example.) Now I'm beginning to understand why there seems to be such a paucity of score cues on this CD. I think either Glass' score was partially rejected or he only scored a small part of the movie to begin with.

Crystal, regarding your question for the song that's playing while she is putting on her apron. It's actually from another soundtrack, Life as a House. It's track 11, "Building a Family". I also love this song! Hope this helps! :)
An excellent soundtrack to a delightful movie! February 27, 2008 Judy K. Polhemus (LA) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Opera arias, fun songs, melancholic tunes combine to produce a fabulous soundtrack to a perfectly delightful movie. I ordered the CD immediately after viewing the movie. Since then I have listened twice and totally adore this music--every track, every song, every voice, original to the movie or renowned. Here's what you get: Track 1: Instrumental Track 2: Sway, performed by Michael Buble--a great Latin number Track 3: Celeste Aida, performed by Pavarotti Track 4: O mio Babbino caro, performed by Renata Tebaldi--my favorite Track 5: Phillip Glass original composition--the piano notes are bell-like Track 6: Libiamo ne lieti calici Brindisi, Joan Sutherland Track 7: Via con me, performed Paolo Conte--a terrific and lively song; I liked the singer so much I plan to order one of his CD's Track 8: La donna e mobile, Joseph Calleja Track 9: Un bel di, Renata Tebaldi, the most beautiful aria in opera (my opinion) Track 10: Philip Glass, original composition Track 11: Cielo e mar, Pavarotti Track 12: Mambo Gelato, performed by Ray Gelato, another Latin number perfect for "Dancing with the Stars" Track 13: Nessun donna, Pavarotti Track 14: Count on My Love, performed by Liz Phair The listing of the singers eliminates any necessity for song descriptions. Arias are arias and these are among the best. For the unlearned this CD is a perfect introduction to opera, from composers to music to performers. Then there are the two original compositions by Academy-nominated Glass, Latin numbers for dancing, and three popular singers. An all-around great soundtrack and CD for popping in the player. Enjoy!
