Amazon.com After a long career as a crossover queen, Gloria Estefan, along with her co-composer-producer husband, Emilio, has been captured in a nostalgic mood. The album's title, 90 Millas (90 Miles), refers to the distance between the couple's ancestral Cuba and their present home in the city of Miami where, first as lead vocalist with the Miami Sound Machine and later as a solo artist, Ms. Estefan became an important figurehead for a large ex-pat community. On this set, she is heard exclusively in Spanish, fronting a superstar line-up of singers and instrumentalists (a partial list would include Paquito d'Rivera, Johnny Pacheco, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Carlos Santana, Jose Feliciano, Arturo Sandoval, Sheila E., and movie star and Latin music aficionado Andy Garcia). Her previous three albums performed exclusively in that language, Mi Tierra (1993), Abriendo Puertas (1995), and Alma Caribena (2000), were each a bit more far-flung stylistically but this opus is Havana all the way. Highlights include the string-backed charanga romance of "Besame," the high-spirited, "Guantanamera"-like call-and-response of "Refranes," the percussive, brassy frenzy of "Esta Fiesta No Va Acabar," the African influenced "Morenita," and "Volvere," which bears more than a slight melodic resemblance to Cat Stevens' "Wild World." The material is uniformly newly composed, and highly authentic and lilting it is, too. But it would also be wonderful to hear Ms. Estefan interpret a few classic boleros and sons, especially she has long since proven that she is equipped to do so with flying colors. --Christina Roden

Excellent traditional Cuban music October 19, 2007 C. Dearing (Pompano Beach, FL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Gloria and Emilio Estefan, her husband and the record producer, were able to include great performances by the very best interpreters of traditional Cuban music. This record is a must buy for those who love Cuban music.
"Mi Tierra" Part 2 - She finally did it! September 20, 2007 Cabir Davis 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
For years, I have waited for Gloria to make a sequel to her smash early 1990s classic "Mi Tierra" (the best Spanish language album in existence, according to me). Who could forget that album, and song after beautiful song that still resonate after all these years - "Si Senor" and the absolutely breathtaking "Con Los Anos Que me Quedan". "90 Millas" is more of a return to form for Gloria, and outdoes all her previous CDs from the late 1990s. At one point, the native language albums from Estefan were not at all inspiring or interesting, and seemed to insult the memory of "Mi Tierra". However, when I first heard "No Llores" I knew this was the return of Gloria in a big way, and Im glad to report that the entire CD has the very Cuban, carnival feel that some of the upbeat tracks on "Mi Tierra" did. Remember "No Hay Mal"? Well, this CD has LOTS of songs just like that, so you know what you're in for. If you liked her last album, the widely appreciated "Unwrapped", you will love this. Its three times better, and quite an achievement. Also, if you know anyone who loves "Mi Tierra", this would make a perfect gift for that person. If you're Cuban, you need to obviously own this immediately. I'm so glad that Gloria is embracing her Cuban roots without any pretense. Five Stars.
I get accused of only reviewing.......... March 14, 2008 Robert C. Hufford (Hopewell, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
....albums by gorgeous blondes. That isn't true, but here it would only be half-true; Gloria isn't blonde. This is an absolutely great album by a singer who proved her worth long ago; I don't know that she's ever sung a bad note..... This album of what, to me, were unknown songs will appeal to two fan bases; [1] fans of Gloria [2] fans of Cuban music, of which we have plenty, as Cuba is only "90 Millas" away. It was a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. If you can understand Spanish, you'll like it even better. Gloria Estefan is a fabulous singer who, here, benefits from great back-up, and engineering. If you have any interest in Gloria, or this genre of music, don't miss it.

I'm not an Estefan fan in particular - but I love Cuban music and saw her perform on the Today show - impressive. This cd is absolutely wonderful - very emotional for me - heart to heart material. What a band! Viva Cachao - for just one.
Fantastic CD....loved it! October 20, 2007 Lillian R. Gonzalez (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This has got to be one of the best CD's Gloria has made. Loved it so much, that I bought one for my mom. The Spanish melodies are wonderful, and they remind me so much of Cuba (I left 44 years ago). Thank you Gloria, once again, you have done it! Lilly G., Santa Clarita, CA
