Whitney's mega-selling debut from 1985 gets a Japanese reissue (it's one of 5 including her first 4 studio albums and 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack). As usual with Japanese releases it's beautifully packaged, in this case featuring miniture LP artwork. But the problem is this: it's not been remastered at all and sounds as soft as the domestic version which is much, much cheaper.
I have to say this is an increasing trend with Japanese CDs. They used to be known for their superior quality but now it seems they just re-release any old album, don't bother to remaster it but stick it in a 'paper sleeve' to get the completists money.
None of Whitney's albums sound bad but her first album is the one that needs an overhaul soundwise. Perhaps with the release of 'I Look To You' her back catalogue will get a decent reissue.
So, unless you're into LP artwork and are a Whitney completist with money to burn, I'd recommend you give this version a miss. I haven't heard the other 4 albums in the series but it's probably safe to assume they won't have been remastered either...
I have to say I'm disappointed in this reissue. 'Whitney Houston'is an excellent album and deserves better than this.
