another standout from Thalia April 25, 2008 peggyd (Boston) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thalia Zedek is one of the most underrated musicians. She is a true original. This is another great album in a long list of beautiful recordings. I have been a fan for 25 years when she started out playing in backyards in Allston. Come made incredible music, but solo Thalia is the best.
Better, but not outstanding. June 29, 2008 Jedediah J. Shaffer (Michigan) Thalia Zedek's previous album, "Trust Not ...", was a stumble after the breath-taking "Been Here And Gone". This new album is a lot better then "Trust Not ..."; it seems that Thalia's learned she has to make songs sound different, and not just 60 minutes of one tone and tempo. So that's an improvement. But on the flip side, nothing about "Liars" will outright grab you, either. There isn't a "Ex-communications" or "1926", a song that reaches out and just grabs your heart for all its worth. The songs are tight, the band sounds energized, and the lyrics are, as always, stirring and emotional. But there's just nothing that makes this album stand out. It's a lot like the last two albums by Zedek's former band, Come; competent, but you know they're capable of so much more.
Master Class April 27, 2008 L. Grasslands A much fuller sounding record than Been Here And Touch Not Those, while it still sounds very different from those sublime Come records. It has her solo thread running through it, a developed sound and musical sensibility that is entirely her own. She sounds like no one else, and no one else sounds like her. A heavy hitter of an album. It's a shame the press are too preoccupied with dire "factory Indie" to hear a really towering master class in true indie rock.
As good as ever May 3, 2008 Randall Sound (Fredericksburg, VA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Been Here and Gone" is in my top 5 records of all time, and this one is just as good. Moody, beautiful, and elegant. Some of her best work ever. Not much else to say, really.
