    5 out of 5 stars Awesome, absolutely awesome!   March 10, 2009

    Ever wait for an artist only to be disappointed? Ever buy a CD put it in the player and 12 songs later in they all sound the same? Well that will not happen with this CD! I've been listening to this over on the MTV leaked site for 3 days. It was a bit of a jolt the first time through. "Wow, what the heck was that?" There is so much variety on this CD, you might think it was different artists or someone switched the CD while you raided the ref. But it's all Kelly. Just like we love her, plus some more. Big vocals, catchy beat, some funny stuff, some pop, some rock, a little techno, one even "contemporary Christian sounding." It's got anthems, ballads, the classic Kelly Jilted Love Songs... One thing it is NOT is country. Whatever buffoon started that "Kelly's next album is going to be country" rumor last year has egg all over his or her face. So I'm calling this Kelly Plus. It's true Kelly Clarkson, plus some extra stuff we didn't expect. Totally Cool Beans Kelly.

    Added: I just had to add a couple of things. $9.99? Holy smokes. I thought that was a pre-release only price and that it'd jump up after release. If you want to get this CD, now is the time. (And you will, trust me. Once you hear some of these songs on the radio, you'll be wishing you bought it now. :)

    Also, you can d/l Sucks from walmart for free. Goto Kelly's website (kellyofficial) and look for the "dove" ad.

    Prediction: I Want You will be a #1 single, (You just can't get it out of your head. :) ) and Long Shot, Impossible, Ready, all have excellent chances to get in the top 10. If I Can't Have You will be a big dance hit. (Reminds me of Terri Nunn/Berlin, but better.) I even "like" Whyyawannabringmedown, but not for the song, but for that fact that she finally got "that" out of her system because the next 5 songs are awesome. (You'll understand when you listen to the CD.) There are not many performers that could pull off such a range of unique styles of music, yet she does, and they all are core "Kelly Clarkson." Amazing.

    I can only say THANK YOU KELLY! Every minute waiting for this CD was worth it. See you at the show. We'll be near the front again. Can't wait!

    Added:

    If you want to know how I ranked the songs on this CD here it is:

    1. My Life Would Suck Without You 5
    2. I Do Not Hook Up 3
    3. Cry 4
    4. Don't Let Me Stop You 4
    5. All I Ever Wanted 3
    6. Already Gone 5
    7. If I Can't Have You 4
    8. Save You 4
    9. Whyyawannabringmedown 3
    10. Long Shot 5 (my fav)
    11. Impossible 5
    12. Ready 5
    13. I Want You 5
    14. If No One Will Listen 5
    15. Tip Of My Tongue 5 (Major hit here!)
    16. The Day We Fell Apart 4

    Then I went and compared these ratings to my ratings for Kelly's other CDs. I was very surprised. Here is my matrix:

    1 2 3 4 5 AVG
    0 1 1 6 3 -> 4.0 (Thankful)
    0 0 2 4 5 -> 4.2 (Breakaway)
    0 3 2 4 4 -> 3.7 (My December)
    0 0 3 5 8 -> 4.4* (All I Ever Wanted)

    From a stictly personal taste, I'm saying this is her best CD to date, at least for now. Just in case you want to know, I ranked each song 1 to 5 stars, 1 star=1 point, 2 stars = 2 points etc. Then add up the points and divide by the total no. of songs to get the average. Sorry, Amazon messes up the formating of the matrix. :-( But you can probably figure it out. :-)

    5 out of 5 stars All I Ever Wanted - A FANTASTIC CD from Kelly Clarkson   March 10, 2009

    If you're looking for a really diverse, and FUN CD to listen to, then look no further than this!

    First, I am a Kelly Clarkson fan, have been since I first saw her on American Idol back in 2002. I've actually really enjoyed all her albums, but felt she really hit her groove with Breakaway, and then continued to surprise and delight me with her last outing, My December.

    This CD bridges both worlds, it plays to her harder edge, the one she explored more fully on My December and mixes it up with the poppier and more radio-friendly melodies she displayed on Breakaway - and the result is a smash! All I Ever Wanted is one of those rare CD's, you know, the kind where all the songs are good, and you don't skip past alot of them when listening to it.

    On All I Ever Wanted, Kelly displays versatility, most of the songs styles are pretty different, but all of them are held together by one of the surest and strongest voices in pop today. She co-wrote about half the CD, but this time, chose to collaborate with writers who have a greater ability to provide her with the memorable, and yes, more hooky arrangements and melodies that we will undoubtfully be listening to for the greater part of 2009.

    My favorite songs change with each listen, an amazing thing! Right now the standout tracks are I Do Not Hook Up, All I Ever Wanted, Cry, Long Shot, Already Gone and If I Can't Have You... However, I find it interesting that if I had written this review yesterday, I might have chosen other songs...

    Is it glossy and aimed at radio? Absolutely! But her voice and her personality shines throughout each cut, and I have to wonder...is there anything that she CAN'T sing? I love her voice, and when you mix that voice with tunes that are this catchy, the result is pure magic..

    I love Kelly, and yes, I have a soft spot for her more cohesive and personal (but less radio-friendly) music on My December.. But, I have to say, the music on this CD is definitely more accessible, and more fun to listen to.. If given a choice, I would much rather have Kelly singing to me when I turn on my radio than anyone else... so this CD works perfectly for me!

    I have been listening to this album non-stop. It is definitely one of my top ten faves right now. Amazing vocals, catchy songs, and total high energy make this a must buy. I love it! Way to go Kelly! Can't wait to go to her concert and see her perform it live.

    4 out of 5 stars 'All I Ever Wanted' Review   March 10, 2009

    This release from Kelly Clarkson is fun, sounds fresh and doesn't sound like a lot of what's on the radio today. What makes 'All I Ever Wanted' leaps and bounds better than 'My December' is simply the fun, light-heartedness of the release. There are some ballads but the production on each is consistent and very pop-orientated, and Clarkson's voice and the thoughtful attention to the lyrics all combine to make for a really addictive, memorable listening experience. If you were let down by 'My December', you will no doubt want to give this release a try because this is a cleaner, more enjoyable release from Clarkson.

    The best tracks are those that are an infusion of your typical pop/rock sound with the heart of a ballad. "Cry", "Already Gone", "All I Ever Wanted" and "Impossible" are the stand out tracks, with strong lyrics and Clarkson's signature vocals belting out lyrics that, unlike with many artists, actually have heart and substance to them. These sounded a little dated, simply due to the pop treatment, but I found that aspect the best when we see a lot of artist going for overly processed voices and following the herd with R&B-orientated songs. Other tracks such as "Don't Let Me Stop You" and "Long Shot" play more with the rhythm and the beat, helping them to stand out and remain memorable. There really isn't much to complain about with this release, as I found all the songs listenable and none truly skip-worthy. Some songs, the ones mentioned in this review, were simply better and stood out in my listening of the release from start to finish.

    In all, a great release from Clarkson with her returning to her pop roots. Worth the purchase and worth a listening.

    5 out of 5 stars All We Ever Wanted   June 21, 2009

    I think I've been neglecting to actually sit down and review Kelly Clarkson's latest feat because of all the baggage this album carries with it. "All I Ever Wanted" follows the critically-acclaimed, controversy-filled, Clarkson-penned "My December," which, in its defense, has sold over two million copies worldwide with very little support from her record label. (You go, Miss Independent.) This album will also be viewed by some as Clarkson's surrendering to the pop formula that worked for the massive success of "Breakaway." Add that to the media's constant scrutiny of our Idol's weight and public image, and you've got more baggage than Clarkson deserves. But I will say in this review what I said in my last one--that with all the talk surrounding an album, it is very easy to forget about what matters most, and all that Clarkson ever wanted: the music.

    We all know that Clarkson's vocal range far surmounts (by light years) those of her fellow pop starlets. Now, however, upon having been listening to "All I Ever Wanted" nearly every day since its release, I can safely say that with that voice, Kelly Clarkson might just be one of the greatest artists of our time. There is something in her delivery and in her vocal subtleties that mark Ms. Clarkson as a musical master-class. You can say that I am simply a diehard or that I am overstating her abilities, but listen to this album from start to finish, and see if you don't agree with me then. I've had mixed feelings about "My Life Would Suck Without You" since the moment I heard it was written by Max Martin and Dr. Luke--the duo behind the infectious "Since U Been Gone." Regardless, it is catchy, well-sung, and it delivers a refreshing message that even the most perfect relationship can be highly dysfunctional. It's good, but it is only a taste of how good the rest of the album will turn out to be. Second single "I Do Not Hook Up" follows along in the same pop-rock vein, but even catchier than its predecessor and carrying with it an even more refreshing message of quality over quantity. We shift gears on the country waltz-inspired "Cry," a song about dealing with the aftermath of a torn friendship, and Clarkson's delivery is honest as it gets. "Don't Let Me Stop You" is a personal favorite--despite its musical similarities to "Behind These Hazel Eyes"--in that it's a more grown-up approach to Clarkson's usual kiss-off demeanor. The title track, "All I Ever Wanted," is a funky, almost Franz Ferdinand-sounding track that isn't a standout by any means, but is too good to be deemed album filler.

    This is where it starts to get even better. "Already Gone" is one of my favorite tracks that Clarkson ever recorded. Ever. Co-written with Ryan Tedder, the ballad is a mature and hauntingly beautiful plea to a lover that their time is up. If there is one track to listen to off of this album, I would have to claim that it is this one. The message is real and honest, as is her vocal performance. This standout is followed by the Eurythmics-inspired "If I Can't Have You," another Tedder collaboration. The dance-pop attitude of the song shows that Clarkson really can do it all. (Or sing it all, rather). "Save You" is a simple and pretty lament that makes us wonder why Kelly doesn't sing more ballads. We then understand why when we hear the punk-infused "Whyyouwannabringmedown." As if Kelly Clarkson wasn't already the queen of post-feminist pop anthems and power ballads, she goes along and proves herself to be a legitimate rock star. Honestly, blare this song with your windows down the next time you're driving on a hot summer's day. Head bobbing to the extreme.

    And then the last third of the album carries with it its own message of defying the odds, starting with the Katy Perry-penned "Long Shot," a fun and well-written tune. This message is then epitomized in "Impossible," in which Clarkson so appropriately declares "can someone tell me why it's so hard taking chances? / You draw the line and think that I won't ask for more / I will stumble and I'll make my own mistakes / But I won't worry about it anymore--it's impossible." If there was ever a more accurate lyric showing us just what Ms. Clarkson has the capabilities of doing. Next is "Ready," a summer-sounding, inspiring declaration of maturity and growth. What surprised me the most on this album was "I Want You," a lighthearted and fun tune reminiscent of 70s girl groups or The Beach Boys. Closing out the album (the standard edition) is the Clarkson-produced "If No One Will Listen." Insipid lyrics aside ("if no one is left standing after the bombs explode..."), the inspirational ballad is another indication of Clarkson's maturity, and of the sort of waters she might traverse into musically in the future. The album is exciting in the sense that we have no idea what sort of music Clarkson will deliver next. Ever a staple of the pop-rock genre, Kelly has proven to us time and time again to never pigeonhole her and her talents. "All I Ever Wanted" tells us what we already know: that the girl can sing, but she is still growing and maturing, both personally and musically. And just like "My December" was an evolution from "Breakaway," which, in turn, was a well-received evolution from "Thankful," I'm sure Clarkson's next endeavor will be a progression from "All I Ever Wanted"--an album that I feel fits perfectly in her ever-growing catalogue of good, quality music, which is really all we ever wanted, anyway.
