Album Description
Deluxe edition Two CD set. 'Come on Over' the first single from her highly-anticipated 2008 Country album, was written by Jessica, Rachel Proctor, and Victoria Banks. It has already made history as the highest chart debut by a solo artist with no prior history on the Country chart as it races up the charts. The album was produced by Grammyr Award winning songwriter Brett James (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts) and famed producer John Shanks (Alanis Morissette, Bon Jovi, Keith Urban). Jessica had a hand in penning almost every song on the album, joining some of the best songwriters in Nashville (Troy Verges, Hillary Lindsey). Even more noteworthy is that the title track, "Do You Know," was written for Jessica by one of her musical idols, Dolly Parton, who also graces the track with her own unique vocals.

I am writing this review from the point of view of a fan of Jessica since her very first album, "Sweet Kisses," and the release of her first single, "I Wanna Love You Forever." If you look back at Jessica's album history, you can see the amazing growth she has sustained throughout her career. I truly think that "Do You Know" is the first album since "In This Skin" to accurately showcase her songwriting and vocals skills. I would even say that "Do You Know" rivals "Sweet Kisses" in vocals. Jessica has said herself that her new album shows who she truly is as an artist and person. The result of that are strong, moving vocals with relatable, well-written songs. The differences between "A Public Affair" and "Do You Know" are so apparent! For those of you that are disappointed that Jess has left the "pop" world, I am confused where your reasoning comes from! If you truly love Jessica as an artist and person, then it only makes sense to support her career choices, especially when she is opening up her heart for all of us to listen with this album. And for those of you comparing Jess to Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift, again I am very confused! The funny thing is, Jessica isn't trying to compete with those girls. In fact, Jessica is just being herself. Jessica's new album is truly amazing and I hope everyone out there will give her a chance. She's accomplished so much in her career, and this album is a sure sign of greater things to come!

I have actually bought the album and listened to it a good amount to be able to actually talk about it and I will say that there is ONE thing that isn't great (and I say great because other than this ONE thing, everything else is absolutely BRILLIANT!) and that is the last song on the album, which is the title track with Dolly Parton, the song starts off alright and then the last couple of minutes REALLY let the song down, they are filled with Jessica practically shouting her notes and Dolly Parton repeatedly saying "do you know" which do NOT sound well together, and if that doesn't let the song down enough, the drums just sound like a noise that doesn't fit the song either. As I said, for me, this is the ONLY negative thing about this album, I personally think Jessica agreed to have Dolly Parton sing on the song simply because of who she is and how successful and very well known she is in Country music, the album was also originally going to be called "Sipping On History" which I have no doubt was changed to "Do You Know" as it was written by Dolly Parton.
Right, the positive...I own all 5 of Jessica's Pop albums and have been a fan of hers for nearly 10 years now, and her 6th album (her first Country album) is EASILY her best album to date, she proved on her previous 5 albums that she is right up there (vocally) with Mariah Carey and Tina Arena and that she can actually write her songs. This album though, takes Jessica Simpson to a new level, the lyrics, the vocals and the music are all put down in a fine art on her first Country album.
The album starts with the lead single "Come On Over" which is a very catchy song, the lyrics are fun and her voice sounds great, most people know this song by now. "Remember That" is the next song and also the next single, I can see why as it's simply a great song, I like how it ends too, it's different to most songs. "Pray Out Loud" is a catchy midtempo song about (you guessed it) praying out loud, Jessica's always talked about her belief in God and it's all here in this song. "You're My Sunday" is next and is not only my favourite song on the album, I'd also say it's my favourite song of Jessica Simpson's, I think the lyrics are great but it's her voice that really makes this song. "Sipping On History" is about you could be 80 years old and looking back and what a great life you have made with your partner, her voice also sounds great. "Still Beautiful" is the most uptempo song on the album, it's VERY catchy and the lyrics are really positive. "Still Don't Stop Me" and "When I Loved You Like That" (the 2nd being the "ballad of the album") both show Jessica's voice at it's best, as does "Might As Well Be Making Love" which shows some of Jessica's best notes to date. "Man Enough" is the one song where her voice and music really go well together, the guitar sounds great here.
As someone who has been a fan of Jessica Simpson's for a long time, I am glad that Jessica has said she isn't going to make a Pop album again, as this is the music that fits her much better and also, for someone who has been a fan of Jewel's for years aswell, it's a big compliment to Jessica to say that her first Country album surpassed Jewel's.

If I hear one more comparision to Carrie Underwood... I'm going to scream. Jessica Simpson IS NOT Carrie Underwood. This is not a bash on Carrie. I own both of her albums and like her music. So they have dated the same guy... they used the same song writer.... both are blonde. Big deal. This is Jessica's album, so I will review this without reviewing Carrie Underwood.
Obviously pop music had turned it's back on Jessica Simpson and her dating her new infamous football player seems to have returned her back to Texas. Jessica has never hid her roots with Texas and that's where her first wedding was, so the jump to country music didn't surprise me. Actually I was thrilled when I heard that and I when I heard her first single I knew she had made it. People are going to hate it because she's Jessica Simpson and she's tarnished her golden image with a divorce. I think the move was a great idea for Jessica.
That being said... this is her first country album. There are bright spots on the album that show so much promise and there are fillers.
Come On Over: This song is just meant to be fun and roaring country girl with some spunk. It's not meant to be deep.
Remember That: One of the best songs on the album! This song is honest. Jessica was right to cry at this album. I don't know where she drew this from, but you believe her. This is a solid song and it stuck out in my memory after the first listen to the whole album.
Pray Out Loud: The song has a good idea behind it and I like singing to it, but I don't think it met its' potential.
You're My Sunday: People have accused her of being too quiet and then shocking you into wailing... when I heard it, I liked it. I thought she's describing how peaceful a Sunday without anything to do can be, but the rage of a hurricane came out in her voice. Maybe it was on purpose and think about it that way. I don't think this is one of the solid songs on the album, but I like it well enough.
Sipping On History: This is right up there with "Remember That". I love it. I love the idea and the presentation. She doesn't over sing it and shows that she doesn't have "wail" every song. She's proven she has a strong voice, but let's it just flow in this one. You can feel the hurt and I can see it in her eyes without even looking seeing her sing it.
Still Beautiful: This is like "You're My Sunday". Good song, but kinda a filler.
Still Don't Stop Me: Joins "Remember That" and "Sipping On History". This song is played out very well in her emotion in her voice. You believe it and if you've been there... you get what she's saying. Maybe that's the problem with this song though... you've had to been there to get it.
When I Loved You Like That: This isn't quite one of the bright spots, but her presentation is amazing. I get the anger, the hurt, and the vulnerability. This song is very personal for her. It comes through.
Might As Well Be Making Love: This a leftover for a pop song, I think. Of all the songs, I could see this being a pop song. It's cool to sing to, but I wouldn't have recorded it.
Man Enough: This song is kinda cliched.
Do You Know: From the first note... I knew this was a Dolly Parton penned song. People are saying this is Dolly's way of showing everyone to make face with Jessica. I don't read it that way. Dolly is golden and anything she touches becomes that. Dolly sees something in Jessica. I trust Dolly enough to give Jessica a good hard look even if I wasn't her fan before this album.
All in all, this is a good first attempt. It's not a break-through and people who "hate" Jessica are going to find it easy to hate this album. It's not a bad album. You have to think of this as her first album period. This is a whole new genre for Jessica. She's shown flashes of her own voice coming through in country music, but it might take an album or two before she gets there fully. Until then, I'll enjoy this album and have been listening to it non-stop since I got it. Good job, Jess. I think country music is where you belong.

I can tell you this is her best work yet.
Her shift to country music was the best thing that she ever did. Every song on this album is beautifully written and she sings the songs better than ever.
To pick my favorites is almost impossible because I like them all so much, but "We might as well be making Love", "Pray Out Loud", "You're my sunday" and "Do you know" are the ondes that I listen the most. Her voice and emotion really makes you love all these songs.
The second cd, which is a dvd, it's really great too. Basicly, it's an interview with her about this album and her inspirations. Also there's the video for "Come on Over" and a behind the scens.
I ask all of you to strip down your preconceptions and buy this album. You will not be disapointed.

I have to say that I think this style of country music works perfectly for Jessica Simpson. It wasn't too country for one to say it was unnatural. The album deals mainly with love but also other issues thus making it well rounded. So we have the flirtatious 'Come on over', Break up songs like 'When I loved you like that' and 'still don't stop me' as well as 'Remember that' about an abusive relationship. However, Jessica also sought to inspire with uplifting tracks like 'Pray out loud' and 'still beautiful' which is an ode to Jessica's positivity about life even at the saddest of times. 'Man enough' and 'Might as well be making love' are truly beautiful and powerful songs, as is the title track 'Do you know'. This is the amazing duet with Dolly Parton where she serves only to compliment Jessica's vocal which reach a spine tingling peak at the end adlibs.
Ignore the dud reviews out there that judge this album really on Jessica's partly tabloid created image/reputation rather than on its own merit. This is probably her best and most mature, honest and natural album. I didn't give it 5 stars only because on my earlier listens, I really felt that there could have been one or two more songs of an uptempo nature.
Have a look out for the bonus itune track 'Never not beautiful'. That's a great song about loving those many special people in your life and the little things they do. Very pure and honest. It is a shame this was no on the CD copy.
