very different - but not necessarily in a bad way November 5, 2008 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Let me first start off by saying that this CD is not for everyone - especially those who are looking for a typical Brad Paisley "Time Well Wasted" type album. "Play" has only four songs that have vocals on them, which makes it pretty much a bluegrass/instrumental album. Very well done, but very non-traditional and not "cookie cutter" radio ready country music. It's a big gamble, and a lot of people are not gonna be happy about it.
That being said - wow, can this guy play the strings! Listen to him tear them up on the first two tracks "Huckleberry Jam", and "Turf's Up". There are also some mellow instrumental tunes such as "Kim", which is one of my personal favorites. The album is a little similar to Union Station and Nickel Creek type guitar play. Different stuff - and you really have to hear it for yourself to decide if it's for you or not.
Overall, I find it very interesting and ironic that two of country music's biggest stars (kenny chesney and brad paisley) both come out with non-traditional country albums within a month of each other. Kenny with his island style, and now Brad with his guitar play. Maybe this will shake up the music industry a little bit, and open the door to a wider range of new music coming into the genre.
Genius, Very Talented Thru and Thru!! November 4, 2008 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Brad Paisley never ceases to amaze me. This CD is not for those looking for your typical words and music, although there are a few Songs with words it is mostly instrumental and it is AMAZING!!! I love Start A Band, Keith Urban and Brad play very well together!!! Wish they would do a double headliner tour together!!
Huckleberry Jam is AWESOME really shows his Expertise on the guitar and Cluster Pluck is great too with special guest stars James Burton, Vince Gill, Albert Lee John Jergensen Brent Masen Redd Volkaert and Steve Wariner.
If you love the way Brad Plays this is the CD for you!!

this is a fantastic album! I'm a guitar fanatic, & you don't get much better than this. i hope joe satriani takes him out on a g3 tour someday. i could see brad making more instrumental albums in the future. lets hope anyways!!!!
Post-partum regression November 6, 2008 2 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am tempted to lump this together with Kenny Chesney's last three releases. I realize every artist has the urge to "just do an album just the way I want to do it." I think of some of the great, the latest Jamey Johnson, instant classic. Unfortunately, this release is not up to par with Brad's first five releases. Every artist deserves to keep their fan support after they lay an egg (does Chris Gaines ring any bells?). Kenny Chesney, the Old Blue Chair release was an indulgence for him. Alan Jackson's "Precious Memories" was an indulgence for him. One worked, one was forgiveable. But for Kenny to follow his up with two more similar releases of island music (which given the subject matter of the latest release chronicaling his breakup with Renee Z, sounds like Jimmy Buffet on quaaludes), if you want to make country, make country. If you want to make beach music, make beach music. Consider the loyalty and expectation of your fans, particularly in the Country music arena. Back to Brad, he is a very talented guitar player, he has been on all of his albums. He is also a great judge of good songwriters. Stick with what you do best, dance with the one that brung 'ya. This CD is OK, but had I listened to it before I bought it, I probably would have passed. I held out hope that the duet with Andy Griffith would hold some redemptive value. I don't think Earnest T. Bass could have saved that duet. Brad and Kenny, you guys want to make souviner albums, make them for your families for Christmas or special days. For your fans who plunk down their hard earned cash for your releases and concerts, have some consideration for us. Warning labels, pre-reviews, stop the surprises. I have put "Play" in my collection under "Played".
Music, from a musician. Not a puppet. November 6, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
As the other reviews have stated, This is not your typical Brad Paisley album, Theres alot of guitar instrumental stuff. When I found out thats what it was I wouldnt say I was dissapointed, because its great music but I was sort of expecting it to be another album full of songs that would be hits one day. Unfortunately instrumental stuff doesnt do good on the radio so thats not likely to happen.
Brad paisley is a musician in that he plays music. Hes not a singer who goes out there and does the typical song and dance. If you want that there are plenty of other artists to choose from. I really like Kim and More than just this song on this album so far, although there arent really any bad tracks, Except Waitin' on a woman simply because we already have the real version on another album and when it says "with andy griffith" its more like "with andy griffth talking through a telephone dubbed in" You cant really knock brad for it though because there are already 15 other tracks to choose from.
Overall I know alot of people are going to buy this because its brad paisley and it also features alot of other great artists and they are probably going to be dissapointed. But, if your the type of person who loves music and not just whatever is on the top 20 countdown, you'll likely enjoy this.
