~island country at its best~ October 17, 2008 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Need a vacation, but can't afford one? Simply pop in this CD - close your eyes - and just dream about being on the beach...relaxing and soaking up the sun!!!! Almost all of the songs on here are just so soothing and healing, and the lyrics really make you think of what this life is all about...what should our real priorities be?
"Lucky Old Sun" is an amazing follow up album to "Be As You Are" - I totally love it! The highlights to me on here are "Way Down Here", "Down The Road", "Nowhere To Go, Nowhere To Be", "Spirit Of A Storm", "Boats", and "The Life"...which are all just really mellow and relaxing - acoustic island music at its best! In my opinion, the only song that really doesn't seem to fit in on the CD is "Ten With A Two". Also, i must say that if you didn't like Kenny's 'Be As You Are' album, you probably won't like this album either - although the lyrics are deeper and quite different - it is still island style country music.
I gotta shout out a huge thank you to Kenny...i really appreciate the effort in making this CD. I know there was a lot of pressure to come out with another greatest hits album ($$$$$$$) but I totally needed this island music fix, because I can't travel right now - and I know that there are many other fans who cannot currently go on an Island getaway either. It is sooo nice to just play this CD over and over and dream about being in the islands...lying on the beach....hearing the ocean waves.....and soaking up that lucky old sun! In our crazy lives it's easy to get caught up in everything and lose sight of the big picture...but life on earth is so fragile and short. Listen closely to the lyrics in "The Life"...they're soooooo true!!!!! Overall ~9/10~
Lovin' this side of Chesney... October 15, 2008 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
Haunting, Heartbreaking, yet showing the calm resolve that only comes from figuring it out, coming to terms with it (whatever it is), and realizing "it is what it is". Wow... I absolutely love this CD. The words of the many songs are just "real", and that is the great thing about country music, it is best when it is real. The music and arrangements make for some beautiful music! At times I feel I can close my eyes, feel the warm sun on my face and wind in my hair, and the quiet calm that comes with that, wherever you find your paradise... thanks Kenny.
Another Winner From Chesney! October 18, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is one of KC's best albums to date; in fact, the only songs I really don't like are "Everbody Wants To Go To Heaven" and "Ten With a Two." Other than these two songs, this album is great!
Once again, KC does not do traditional country music here; yet, this album does not have the same rock-and-roll sound of his previous hits such as "Young" and "Big Star." The first few songs on here are more soul bearing and refelctive, haunting and telling; think songs like "Road and the Radio" and "There Goes My Life." The second part of the album is KC's trademark "island country" music that has come to define his recent cds; think slower-versions of songs like "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" and "When the Sun Goes Down."
Overall, most of the songs on "Lucky Old Sun" have a slower feel than many of KC's past albums - as if KC wanted this album to be about storytelling instead of simply producing "good time" music. My favorite songs are "I'm Alive", "Way Down Here" and "Nowhere To Go, Nowhere To Be." I highly recommend this album!
Not my favorite. . ..liked Just Who I Am Poets and Pirates Better! October 23, 2008 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
Not my favorite Kenny CD, I liked his last CD much better as a matter of fact I joke that I'm going to burn it up. If you liked his CD Be As You Are (which I did not, I'm selling it in my garage sell and I've been a Kenny fan from the beginning) you'll LOVE this CD. I had been waiting for it to come out since "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" was released but I listened to half the CD and wasn't impressed, honestly skipped over one song after a minute. My best suggestion is go preview it on rhapsody or something to see if you like it before buying I wish I had remembered to do that first but knowing Kenny I didn't think it'd be bad. Which I know it's a matter of opinion but just fyi if you didn't care for Be As You Are like me don't get Lucky Old Sun :-)
Island Country October 15, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have been waiting for a completely new album to come out for a while, After giving the entire cd a listen I think this one will be one of my favorites. Many of the tracks have a laid back, relaxing feel to them. Definetly more of the slow paced island feel to them vs some of the older upbeat country songs like she thinks my tractor's sexy. This album is much like be as you are as far as the general feel of it goes. All of the tracks are great, if anything I think that "everybody wants to go to heaven" which has been played alot on the radio lately is one of the weaker ones along with "ten with a two"
Overall, another solid work from one of the genere's best.
