Amazon.com American heartland singer-songwriter and pianist Jon McLaughlin - whose show-stopping live performance of "So Close," the Oscar-nominated song from the Disney movie Enchanted, was seen worldwide during the 80th annual Academy Awards ceremonies - has returned with OK NOW, his second album for Island Records, due October 7th. Fans are getting a sample with the release of a new single, "Beating My Heart," which impacted at the Hot AC radio format on June 9th.
"Beating My Heart" was written by Jon McLaughlin and produced by John Fields, known for his recent chart-topping work with the Jonas Brothers, Lifehouse, and Switchfoot. The new album is being mixed by Tom Lord-Alge and will feature the soon-to-be hit "Smack In To You," written and produced by the Grammy award-winning team of Tricky and The-Dream.
Jon's triumphant Oscar night performance ignited an astonishing 1,514% overnight sales increase at Amazon for Indiana, which neatly took over the #1 spot on the Movers & Shakers chart. "Musically, the big winner of the night was Jon McLaughlin," wrote FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman in his Oscars coverage. "He sang one of the Enchanted songs. Talk about a break-out moment! That's a phenomenal voice... McLaughlin could be the next big thing."
Indiana, Jon McLaughlin's first major label album, received maximum exposure on tours with Sara Bareilles last summer, Paolo Nutini in the fall, and then climaxing with Kelly Clarkson on her 24-city North American tour, October through December.
Named one of "The 10 Hot Guys of Summer" by US Weekly magazine last year, Jon was also seen performing on the CBS-TV daytime drama The Bold & The Beautiful, on NBC's The Today Show and on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Jon McLaughlin Photos
Album Description OK Now is the 2008 second full-length studio album by American singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin. OK Now was preceded by the Electropop-influenced first single, "Beating My Heart", in July 2008. Released digitally in June 2008, the single charted in August 2008, and climbed its way up to number 27 on Billboard's Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks. Synthesizers introduce "You Are the One I Love," a song Jon co-wrote with Jason Reeves, inspired by the tabloid reports about Amy Winehouse's stormy relationship with her husband Blake that shows an empathy to the beleaguered pair. The multi-layered production is driven home by Peter Gabriel-like tribal drum rhythms.

New But Not Better October 10, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was one of the early Amazon 5 star review enthusiasts of the awsome Indiana. I've probably played it 50 times, maybe more. I still love it. OK NOW is no Indiana. Jon spreads his musical wings sometimes with success, sometimes not. But the major drawback of this disc compared with Indiana is that it is way, way overproduced. Songs that could have been terrific are ruined by the production. I gave this CD 4 stars because I like Jon so much but I really would give it 31/2 if i could. I love Jon's musicality. See him on stage and he is pure musical energy.
Breaking My heart 10/10 - his hit single. Love it. Four Years: 8/10. Could have been great but overproduced. You Can Never Go Back: 4/10: way, way overproduced. Could have been good - pure pop. Things That You Say 7/10: Nice. The Middle: 7/10: nice pop, again overproduced. You are The One I Love 8/10: same problem. Always on My Mind 5/10: pretty awful due to production. Dance Your Life Away 5/10: Another pretty awful track. Why I'm Talking to You 6/10: Jon's experiment with Jazz. Not bad, not great. Throw My Love Around 8/10: lovely pure McLaughlin style pop not saddled with overproduction. We All Need Saving 6-7/10 Pretty melody - could have done without the background singing line.
Yeh, for me this is a disc that could have been wonderful, lots of good songs, but the producers got so carried away, they simply ruined several tracks and it's a disappointment. BUT, offered the choice, I would definitely buy it again (On iTunes, there is a bonus track - not worth having).
I've seen Jon live twice. First with Sara Barrellis (he was way better than she was) and then as the lead act shortly before the release of OK NOW. He is GREAT live. If you get a chance to see him, take it. He played a lot of the songs on this disc, and they sounded far, far better with just Jon and his vary talented band (By the way, of all the pictures of Jon in the CD booklet and on Amazon, they definitely chose the worst for the cover!)
Just as Good if not Better October 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Quite often when I buy a new cd it will take me more than a day to get through. There's couple reasons for that. 1. I'm too busy to listen to it straight though. 2. Some songs just really turn me off to it. This album however was the complete opposite... I ran to my room and listened to it straight through 2 times. Each song intriguing me. I'd have to say my least favorite song would have to be Beating My Heart, but that's not to say I don't like it. However I find with many albums, the truly good songs are the unreleased ones. My personnal favorite is Four Years followed closely by Dance Your Life Away. Four Years made me cry the first time I listened to it. It's had the same effect on a lot of my friends. And "Dance" was just such a fun song. I'm not saying that Dance could be considered a masterpiece, but so often masterpieces do nothing for me. I can enjoy a simple, happy song, and that's what "Dance" is. A song slimply celebrating life. I could sit here and type my praise of each song, but I'll let you make you own decision. But I will say one thing, just like his last album, not one song is like another which to me makes a good album, and a good artist. Variety
Talented & Inspirational October 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jon McLaughlin has amazed me. From being a nobody with his first album Indiana, which turned into an overnight success, to this new album OK Now, he now has had phenomenal success doing opening acts for famous musicians, small concerts, and solo performances all over the USA.
In this latest album, he shows us again how talented he is, writing a lot about personal experiences and his love for his home Indiana, in the song The Middle. You think that there's so much you can do with piano rock, but think again, Jon dazzles you again with his jazz number Why I'm Talking To You, and other songs with influences from Harry Connick Jr and Billy Joel.
Jon has now placed himself as upcoming artiste along the same lines as Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw and James Morisson. Not yet to Grammy acclaim like John Mayer, but there is no doubt that if he goes on like this, he will get a Grammy for one of his albums. Already his song from the Disney movie Enchanted, So Close, was nominated for a Grammy for best original song.
I look forward to your concerts and inspirational music Jon!
Excellent CD! October 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a secular artist releasing a new CD. I must say after listening to Jon McLaughlin's lastest effort, I am not disappointed. It is somewhat different sounding from his last CD, Indiana, so it is hard for me to pick a favorite between the two. It is a hard choice, but my favorite track is the final one on the CD. The song about dancing is really the only one I'm not particularly fond of. I look forward to what Jon does musically in the future. I just hope he keeps on his current track and keeps it rated G!

I will buy this based on "Beating My Heart". I have been hearing the song being used on ABC's promo for the new season of its TV shows and had been trying to discover who sang it, with no luck, until this afternoon. My wife was watching the Bonnie Hunt show and I heard him sing it as a musical guest on the show. Listened to the samples on amazon and now I'm hooked. Great music, considering I usually am not impressed by anything released after 1970.
