Album Description According to some very basic laws of nature, when powerful forces come together, some form of energy is created - usually in large amounts. In music, the laws of interaction are no different. When keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer Harvey Mason come together as Fourplay, the result is Energy. Energy grafts a variety of sounds - R&B, pop, African and more - to Fourplay's unwavering jazz foundations. In addition to vocals by East - a charter member since the band's inception in 1990 - the album also features a vocal track by Esperanza Spalding, the upright bassist, composer and vocalist.
Album Description 2008 album from this Jazz supergroup: Nathan East (vocals, bass guitar); Larry Carlton (guitars); Bob James (keyboards); Harvey Mason (drums). 10 tracks.

First impressions not inspiring October 10, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased this CD without hearing anything on it based on the potential of the musicians that form this group. Their past music has always been very good and pleasant. This CD in my opinion doesn't match their past productions when it comes to the "groove factor", for a lack of a better term. Although this CD shows great musicianship and recording quality, while I was listening it began to remind me of the music I hear in the background at a restaurant. A little too mellow and uninspiring in my opinion. Maybe this is one of those CD's that grow on you over time but again I do not find it very exciting at this point. This is just my opinion of course and you my totally enjoy it upon your first listen.

The Best Bob James CD Fourplay Ever Made. October 8, 2008 4 out of 23 found this review helpful
This has to be the best Bob James CD that Fourplay ever made. Thats right, on this CD, Bob James' musical influence can be heard throughout, from Bob James albums, 1, 2, and 3 as well as Taxi. I own all of these and I heard styling cues from each. This is not to say that its the same old sound, its not. I'd day they have broken new grounds with this effort as the compositions are creative and evolutionary, but at the same time sound fresh. Maybe the sound of CDs are getting better as I can honestly say that I have never heard Bob James' piano sound better. All the other instruments sound distinct, too, and the synergy of these musicians was outstanding. This is a great CD with a stellar recording, and tops all past Fourplay CDs. I played it from start to finish without skipping tracks so that says a lot.
"Programme the BJ Musicmachinatron and press Return...." October 11, 2008 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have all the Fourplay albums from the first in 1991. I do like this latest offering, but as I also have numerous Bob James albums from the 70's, the cynic in me says that Bob has popped along to his study, turned on his PC on and dialled up a few "recipes". Cooked on regulo 5 for 30 mins and..... Job Done!
Track 5 is a Bob James classic, but if you jumbled all the tracks together that sound similar, you could call it "Theangelanautilusjoyridemoodstarwestchesterurbanflamingraisetheroofyesclub".
Mind you I'll be there in two years time waiting for the next one!!
