Managed Expectations Make This a Good Christmas CD October 10, 2008 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
When I heard Casting Crowns was releasing a Christmas CD, I couldn't wait. I love their music for taking the familiar and making me look at it in a fresh way. So when I got this CD I was a little disappointed with the play list. It is mostly familiar carols. But once I started listening to it, that feeling went away.
Yes, the familiar carols are here and are plentiful. Yet they sound beautiful. There are gorgeous harmonies on "O Come All Ye Faithful." The guitar is fun on "Joy to the World." "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" gets a new melody. With a string background, it sounds like a lullaby. And the instrumental version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is absolutely breathtaking. It is written for violin but the interplay between it and the piano (and to a lesser extent the orchestra) is haunting.
Only one song on here is truly new. "Christmas Offering" is a praise song, and I truly enjoy it. I've only heard "God is with Us" recorded one other place, by Amy Grant on the Gloria project. This version doesn't stray far away from the original. In fact, it is sung entirely by one of the female members of the group.
And that brings us to "While You Were Sleeping." When I first heard them sing it on LIFESONG, I thought it sounded like a Christmas song. Apparently, it originally was. The only change here is the second verse. Instead of going to Jerusalem, it focuses on the hardships of Mary and the baby that first night. The song sounds the same. And it includes the third verse that focuses on America. I'm still not a fan of that verse, but I have softened to it some over the years.
But I've saved the best for last. The disc opens with a new melody for "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," including a new chorus sung by a boy's choir. It really makes the song come alive in a new way.
I wish they had taken the time to write a few more original tracks for this disc. But what is here is certainly enjoyable. I know I will listen to this CD for many years to come.
Christmas Came Early This Year! October 9, 2008 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
I felt a little strange driving down the highway singing along with Christmas songs before Halloween. But, this CD blesses as ALL of Counting Crows music does. I love each and every song. The arrangements are unique as are the vocal styling. If you like Counting Crows - and who doesn't?! - you will LOVE this album. I hope to hear it in stores and I know it will be on my iPod and in my car. I dare you not to sing along. Each of these tunes will get inside your head and your heart and stay with you all day.

Not only for Christmas....but all year long November 1, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
As soon as this CD was released, we purchased it..we love Casting Crowns. We have not been disappointed!!! The CD is wonderful! Yes.. a lot of traditional Christmas carols, but with 'new' words to some and. The arrangements are different and fresh...the harmonies are absolutely beautiful, and the voices are clear and pure. It's been in my CD player since I got it...it's that good. It's a CD that I will truly be enjoying all year long.
Your favorite CD this Christmas! November 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Casting Crowns has brought old and new together as only true musicians of their caliber can in this brilliant offering for Christmas 2008 that is destined to become your favorite listening CD this season. Traditonal becomes fresh again as Mark Hall and company lend their hearts and unmistakable style to remind us that the music of Christmas is also music for worship. Song meaning has always been of paramount concern for Casting Crowns and "peace on Earth" is the thematic message they wish to convey here. For instance, in a totally original song which kicks off this collection, the meaning of the aging text of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is renewed to it's Civil War era significance to instill hope for people living today. I know you will come away from "Peace on Earth" with a heart full of the spirit of Christmas as I did.
