Great collection of material but bad packaging... September 30, 2008 38 out of 43 found this review helpful
Most people know what is included in this box set so I won't get into details on that. The hardback book is great, the six 8x10 photos are nice, and the blue vinyl is outstanding!
So why two stars?
Both cds and the dvd are scratched beyond belief because of the horrible packaging. The record and discs are both held in the record gatefold. Opening the gatefold, the inside left side is designed like the back of the record jacket and the record is held in that side of the gatefold. On the right hand inside are three slits in the cardboard that hold the discs. The bottom half of the discs slide into the cardboard while the top half is exposed. I cringed when I saw this. Taking all three discs out as carefully as I could, all three have deep scratches on them. To get discs in this quality from a brand new $75+ set is not right. No care was taken into protecting these discs at all.
This is probably going to be a common problem so I hope Sony will give out replacement discs but you'll still have to keep them in seperate jewel cases if you want to keep them protected from damage.
Ripp-Off October 2, 2008 16 out of 31 found this review helpful
Another rip-off reissue! How many more times can they repackage this classic? : (1.) original off-pitch LP with miss-titled tracks (All Blues/Flamenco Sketches) , (2.) off-pitch LP with miss-titles corrected (except in Europe!), (3.) off-pitch CD issue, (4.) correct pitch CD reissue, (5.) CD digital remaster with bonus out-take, (6.) Davis/Coltrane box set, (7.) SACD, (8.) HQ LP.
Now a reissue which includes (5.) & (8.) plus a (9.) CD in session order including breakdowns and studio chat. This latest CD has been available as a bootleg for years - it is really only for obsessives (like me) and is not particularly interesting except that it shows how quickly they created this masterpiece. But why an LP and CD? Any music listener with a quality sound system and good ears will always prefer CDs despite the variable remastering. LPs are for retro listeners who prefer the sound of vinyl. The markets do not overlap! Every time I put on an LP to transfer to digital I wince at the noise - clunk-shoop-shoop-shoop-crackle-shoop-click- music-click-music-crackle etc etc.
Do not buy this - get the boot of the full session from the net and listen for interest. Issue (5.) has great sound and if you have a SACD player and surround sound sound system get the SACD to listen to a transfer of the 3 channel master recording (turn off the rear channels).
The DVD has also been around for many years in much less expensive issues and only includes 'So What'! Hardly 'Kind of Blue Live'
Kinda spensvie October 3, 2008 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
Hey, this disc is only going to be 50 years old once and not really until next year, the same year I will be 50. The two audio CD's sound fantastic. The 58 Sessions stuff sounds better than the KOB disc and that is saying something. I could do without the false starts and studio chatter but it is I guess a historic document that adds something to the package but not necessarily to the audio experience. The DVD is an interesting addition. I had seen the interview part of the disc on TV some time ago. The performance segment is also worth watching. How would you like to have been one of those cats sitting in the folding chairs getting paid union scale to back up Miles and Trane. Great stuff.
The discs aren't scratched as one reviewer put it (maybe his were) but the way they are packaged scuffs the discs with a mark that does not affect the playback or sound of mine. One star off for cheaping out on the jewel boxes.
The photos are a nice touch. Suitable for framing? Not quite. The bound book is interesting but I have not gotten around to reading it. The poster does nothing for me and I don't have a vinyl rig anymore so can't comment on the sound quality of the LP other than to say it's BLUE VINYL.
A curious combination of items to be sure. Would I have done it differently, definitely. Is it worth the money, hard to say but it is a very special package of a very special group of jazz musicians that put down some classic tracks that will be listened to for the next 50 years. Would make a great birthday gift for a jazz lover turning 50 this year or next and Xmas is right around the corner.
5 stars for content and sound quality. 4 stars for everything else.
Miles Davis-Kind of Blue-50th Anniversary Edition October 1, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Everyone who loves good jazz or music in general will know this album,so just a quick note on the quality of the discs. Perhaps I was lucky but my three discs were all right. The DVD had a slight mark in one spot, however it too was ok. The audio discs were fine. However I can't believe that the brains at Sony couldn't find a better way to package the three discs, instead of slipping them bare into a half cardboard sleeve. My 180 gram vinyl record was also in good shape. I have transferred the three discs into traditional plastic cases for protection. The book is very handsome and is well done. The poster is ok-nothing to get excited over. The photo reprints are nice as is the copy of the hand written album notes by Bill Evans. I still think this set is a bit on the expensive side, considering that this album has reaped a ton of profit. For Davis and jazz collectors it will be a "must buy". For everyone else, maybe the price will come down in the future.
a money grab , thats actually worth the price. October 5, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
ive become extremly jaded at the jazz releases in recent years. how many miles compilations do we need with clever titles like cool miles or love miles or the countless rvg reissues that have been rereleased twice in 10 years, while other music sits in the vaults. but here is a package that i must admit, i could not resist.the coffee table book included is well made loaded with great photos and commentary, all be it ,commentary weve heard a 1000 times[this is assuming that people who havent all ready fell under the spell of this masterpiece arent buying this ].this is probably an insiders purchase, those who have made love with this music setting the mood.those who have sit alone on a rainy day watching the rain pelt the ground[porgy and bess is good for that too]and those who always return to this time and time again, it is the rosetta stone of modern jazz.and i cant seem to shake its spell ,i first heard it 10 years ago, i am now 36 and i of course went head long in to miles's music as well as modern jazz and jazz rock fusion due too jazz, i just wish i would have listened to kind of blue and modern jazz sooner.i feel i wasted the first 26 years of my life listening to meaningless drivel.i remenber the first few times i listened to this, how meloncholy it was, how simmering with a slow burning heat it had . "blue in green" my favorite tune from the album has this desolation, this lonely dark brooding inner looking quality. when miles comes in with that harmon mute, he saying yeah man, i understand. life is tough some times.man that tune cuts you to the core.every composition has its own story to tell,so what, with that mysterious intro and laid back feel , freedie freeloader, with its uptown strut, its happy go lucky approach, all blues with its strolling down the street ,enjoying the sights and sound of a casual walk. and flamenco sketches, also back to that lonely blue in green feeling ,but this time with a little hope sprinkled in, i must tell you personally i have realy felt as is i got my moneys worth, the full size poster, the book, the lp, the 8 by 10 photos, bill evens's hand written liner notes.this is a celebration of the greatest jazz album of all time. and ime glad im able to enjoy this. i highly recommend this to all who have a passion for this album. if you haven't heard it. just buy the cd. discover its greatness. then later on down the road, this will be waiting . [the lp does have a warmer sound than the cd , but make sure you judge it by a good top quality turn table and tone arm, a gold needle would help too, grannies 60 year old high fi with the original needle wont cut it].
