This rock opera boasts an entirely original soundtrack that blends equal parts goth and punk rock to form an eerie and powerful musical narrative. All of the actors performed their own songs, and the music was provided by an all-star lineup that features performances from Richard Patrick (Filter), Steven Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Clown (Slipknot), Ray Luzier (Army of Anyone), Brian Young (David Lee Roth's band), Richard Fortus (Guns & Roses), Sonny Moore (First to Last), David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), Daniel Ash (Love & Rockets), Blasko (Ozzy Osborne), Tommy Clefetus (Rob Zombie's band), Melora Creager (Rasputina). Also lending her voice to the soundtrack is the edgy pop star Poe. Japanese musician and composer Yoshiki Haysahi (of the legendary rock band X-Japan) co-produced the music with Joe Bishara to create one of the most diverse soundtracks in movie history.  Annoyingly shrill October 2, 2008

I was sold on this project by the presence of Tony Head, amongst others, but the final result is just a compendium of shrill headache-inducing sub-Steinman rock. From what I've seen of the movie, in clips, the film's no better. Alas.

Ergh, by the way people talk about this around here, you'd think the music would at least be decent.
But trust me, it isn't. This is one of the worst soundtracks I've ever had the displeasure of hearing.

When I first heard the summary of Repo! The Genetic Opera, I thought it was probably a publicity stunt, and a bad one. I mean, a post-apocolyptic horror-musical? Right. With Paris Hilton? What a joke, right? I scoffed, rolled my eyes, and went back to whatever I was doing.
A few days later, a friend (whose taste in movies and music I very much respect) sent me a link to a youtube video, along with the caption: "This is incredible."
Well, that piqued my interest.
The link, it turned out, was to a clip called "Zydrate Anatomy" from a film called Repo! The Genetic Opera.
'Okay,' I thought, 'why not.'
So, I ignored my initial reaction, and watched the video.
Then I watched it again, all the while eating my words.
The music was brilliant. A thrumming bass line melded with the fantastically dark vocals of Terrance Zdunich's "Graverobber" and a slightly techno-vibe, creating something beautiful, infectious, and... well, original. And, yes, Paris Hilton was rather good.
As for the accompanying video? Even in youtube's low quality, the art direction was beautiful, with a touch of Victorian flair in the futuristic Repo! world, and a feel of sumptuous decay. Stunningly beautiful, rich, and... funny. In an ironic sort of way.
I can say without reservation that the rest of the soundtrack is just as wonderful... and varied. The style ranges from industrial rock to classical opera, saluting pretty much everything in between. The performances by the cast are uniformly solid, and -trust me- this soundtrack is one that you can listen to on repeat for days.
As with any soundtrack, there are some songs I like far more than others, which is more personal taste than anything (I'm not a huge fan of 'Bravi' or 'Thankless Job'). Also, the necessity for the plot to be entirely sung (this is an opera, after all) lends itself to an occasional lack of subtlety in lyric, but, more often, the songs are deftly written and piercing.
I recommend this album to ANYONE with a love for music.

I discovered the movie on accident a little over a month ago and was instantly hooked on the sample film clips (which included songs "Mark It Up", "Zydrate Anatomy", and "17"). If you're on the fence about buying this album, watching those clips on the film's official website is probably a good way to firm up that resolve. The full soundtrack is just filled to the brim with excellent music. Better, unlike most albums there's enough variety that you can keep the album on loop for hours without it getting old. There's a dash of punk, a whole lot of rock and roll, and a touch of industrial and metal. You've never heard anything like this. It's unbelievable.

Saw Repo! in Montreal during the FanTasia Film Festival and fell in love with it. Not only is the film extremely original, but so is the soundtrack. I highly recommend the film to any musical/horror fans out there. Bousman has created his masterpiece and it is truly ashame what Lionsgate is doing to it (limited release before going straight to DVD). I am boycotting Lionsgate films from hereon out. People want original content and here it is, now grant us access to it!
