AUSTRALIA'S ALL TIME TOP SELLING FEMALE VOCALIST 8 NUMBER ONE AUSTRALIAN SINGLES & 3.5 MILLON IN SCANS WORLDWIDE At twenty-two Delta Goodrem has already achieved success way beyond her years. Having released two CD's - Innocent Eyes (2003) and Mistaken Identity (2004) which spawned a quick succession of hit singles on the Australian and international charts (most notably topping the charts in the UK and Japan) Delta is now poised to match her international success in the US with the release of Delta. Delta is a collection of twelve 'songs' - in the truest sense of the word - dealing with life, love, and relationships, reflecting both her own life and those of the people around her. The music on Delta was made with the assistance of a world-class collection of producers that include John Shanks (Kelly Clarkson), Marius DeVries (Madonna, U2) and Steve Kipner's team (Christina Aguilera, Natasha Bedingfield) and noticeably showcases Delta's own work as a talented songwriter and performer. Delta is very proud of this new album and feels it's a great representation of where and who she is at the moment, "Everything in front of me is super-exciting, and I'm just looking forward to people hearing my music."

4 out of 5 stars A New Direction For A New Delta   October 24, 2007
9 out of 11 found this review helpful

Delta Goodrem's third full-length release is as infectious as it is different. The album, titled simply 'Delta' marks a departure from the style of her two previous releases 'Innocent Eyes' and 'Mistaken Identity.' Avid Delta fans will notice a great contrast to these previous works.

The instrumentation is broad and diverse. Where Delta's impressive piano playing has stood center stage in much of her previous work, in this release it is present but somehow muted. Filling the space left behind is an array of electronic instruments, percussion, and a heavier presence of guitar. The sound spaces alternate between close and dry, and sweeping, ambient, reverb-friendly joy.

But the instrumentation is not all that's changed. As if to complete the transformation, Delta is clearly taking chances with her musical style. Don't worry, there are plenty of traditional Delta-style ballads on this album, but she flirts with R&B hip-hop and reggae-esque influences on the song 'You Will Only Break My Heart.' The song 'Woman' could almost be country, and 'Possessionless' is certainly Delta's most technically interesting 'pop' song to present.

The album's structure is also pleasantly cohesive. Opening with the stunningly beautiful ''Believe Again,' (of which there must certainly be numerous remixes forthcoming) the track list flows through the first single, 'In This Life' into increasingly adventurous musical territory. The second half of the album tames a bit as it moves through moody slower-tempo ballads before picking up again with the impeccable 'Brave Face.' The album finishes strong with the comparatively stripped down 'Angels In The Room.'

The album falters a bit when it reaches 'Bare Hands,' an entire four minutes devoted to the metaphor of love being like picking thorny roses. Delta's lyric writing is not at its strongest with this track. Ms. Goodrem simply takes the analogy a step too far with lines like "Don't love me with gloves on" and "Make me feel I'm worth the scratches." Complete with electronic instrumentation more appropriate for an album by Usher, this is the weakest and most forgettable track on the album.

The only other element of 'Delta' that keeps the album from achieving irrefutable greatness is that it feels far less personal than her previous releases. Given her now three year old relationship with Brian McFadden, it is difficult to see Delta currently relating to songs such as 'Woman,' (about being under-appreciated and neglected in a relationship) and 'I Can't Break It To My Heart,' (about the recent loss of a mature relationship). Given the intense 'Delta under the microscope' feel of 'Mistaken Identity' in particular, it feels as if something is missing here. However, taking into account the overall quality of the album, this can be nearly overlooked.

Complete with a new sound and new image, Delta's 'Delta' is a fantastic purchase, and certainly worth the cost of being an import.

4 out of 5 stars a great voice, but needs great songs to sing....   July 24, 2008

This my first introduction to the music of Delta Goodrem, who is already a phenom in her native Australia. On hearing the first few snippets of songs I thought she had a little bit of an Olivia Newton-John sound, but she goes well beyond Olivia. Delta has an amazing voice and she has a wonderful range. The one drawback was that after the first two tracks, that were by far my favorites (Believe Again & In This Life), I felt that the tracks were very generic and a little too "pop". Her voice deserves some better material in my opinion.

Delta's songs are mostly upbeat and full of life. At 23 she has learned some big lessons on living life as she is a Hodkin's Lymphoma survivor.

I would love to hear more from her, and with her lust for her life and performing I would bet we have not heard the last of her here in the US. My only hope is that she really gets some great music that really sets her apart from the crowd. With a voice like hers it should have some fantastic songs to really do her voice the justice it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Delta makes it to the US   July 23, 2008

Being interested in a lot of artists that are not famous in the US, I have heard of Delta Goodrem for quite awhile. But I really hadn't listened much of her music til now. It's too bad it took me so long because Delta has got a great voice and this cd has got some lovely songs on it.

    1. Believe again- 5/5 The song starts with the beautiful songs of an orchestra. This is probably my favorite song on the cd and the one I'm sure I'll play the most.

    2. In this life- 5/5 My second favorite track on the album. It's a mid-tempo song and has a great chorus.

    3. Possessionless- 4/5 It's got some good parts to it but it's not one my favorites. It's still a good song though.

4.Born to try- 3/5 I'm kind of half and half on this song at the moment. It's alright but slightly boring to me.

5.Barehands- 5/5 Another great song. I love the beginning of it and I like the chorus. My third favorite song on the album.

    6. God laughs- 5/5 A slow song that has got some great lyrics

    7. You will only break my heart- 5/5 An upbeat song and I'm liking it. I have a feeling that I'll love it even more as time goes on.

8.Woman-3/5 A slower song. I'm not really crazy about this one. It's probably a track I'll skip.

9.Brave face-4/5 A mid-tempo song that I think is alright but it's not one of my favorites. It may grow on me.

10.I can't break it to my heart- 5/5 A slow song about a relationship ending. Beautiful song.

11.One day- 5/5 The last up-tempo song on the album. I like the beat of the song. I think I'll be playing it a lot

12.Angels in the room- 4/5 A slow song to end the album. It's a nice song but it's not one of my favorites on the album. I do think it's a good song to end the album with.

Overall, the cd is a pretty good one and I think that Delta deserves to get some recognition in the US. She's certainly got the talent. This is a good CD for anyone into pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Voice and Positive Lyrics   August 3, 2008

Delta Goodrem is a great singer with a beautiful voice. The songs on this album which I enjoyed the most were the ones that allowed her voice to shine.

My favorite songs on the album are Believe Again, In This Life, Angels In the Room and Possessionless.

The lyrics to Believe Again talk about faith in love being restored and a heart healed. This Life tells of being put on this earth to find our one true love and finding that true love. Angels In The Room talks about how despite all the wrong turns love is found and it must have been Angles in the room that allowed this love to happen. Possessionless talks about being totally open with the one you love.

God Laughs, Woman and I Can't Break It To My Heart are also good songs but the lyrics take on tough issues. God Laughs talks about how bad things can unexpectedly happen so be prepared. Woman talks about a woman wanting more from her love. I Can't Break It To My Heart talks about being afraid to acknowledge that love may be lost.

I only found out after listening to this cd that Delta won a battle with cancer. This explains the serious tone in some of her songs. It also explains the theme of overcoming obstacles in many of the songs as well.

Delta's amazing voice and the positive lyrics make me want to listen to this album again and again. I look forward to her next album.

2 out of 5 stars bring an atlas..   August 1, 2008
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

of all the things american/pop idol has brought to the world, perhaps the most infuriating is the overabundance of vocalists who seem to think that over-singing and exaggerated vibratos = great singing. the latest addition to the crop of vocalist, delta goodrem [aside from giving me some good dreams], seems to have taken that approach to music-making to heart.

as i listened to 'delta,' i couldn't really help but feel underwhelmed, and even a tad disappointed, by what i was hearing. sure, her voice occasionally sounds ok, but most of the time she sounds like a someone desperately trying to be a wholesome version of christina aguilera. i felt like i needed to tie a leash to her voice just so i could follow it around. in fact, listening to her sing was kind of like walking a really strong dog, if you know what i mean. i admit that i do feel a bit bad in saying that because it's pretty obvious that a lot of love and care when into these songs. the songs are far too earnest to believe the contrary. but we all know what the road to hell is paved with...

the biggest problem with 'delta,' is that it seems to want to be all things to all people [if you do buy 'delta,' be sure to buy an atlas, too, because it's all over the map]. you have woozy celion dion-esque balladry, pseudo hip-hop, country-lite, lame attempts at art-pop, and generic, ready-for-a-commerical pop. it's stuff you heard a thousand times before and about 980 of those were more skillfully executed. 'delta' is just bland and full of empty calories. however, i don't think the blandness of the album rests solely on delta's shoulders. most every track is overproduced and bloated [be sure to have a safety pin handy] and surely some of the blame lays with the record company execs and producers. pretty face + ok voice = big bucks. i think she'd be well advised to hire better producers who can encourage a little restraint in the music and her singing. not every song needs [or should] encapsulate every music cliche of the last twenty years. it's just really poor form. and i don't know if delta writes her own material [the CD i received didn't come with any liner notes], but if so, she should really put a little more thought into her lyrics. you get some real groaners like, 'i was leaving footprints, tainted by my past, on this winding road to...oh' and some zingers like, 'all i've got is my body and it's naked for you.' [really? wtf?] it gets better [er, worse]: 'we're so stupid if we think we can control all the dark matter at the center of this black hole. it's going to pull us under if we don't let go.' what does that even mean? it seems to me that black holes suck you in. riptides pull you under, right? it's called a mixed metaphor, honey.

having said that, 'delta' will certainly appeal to some people. maybe even a lot of people. sure, it sounds 'pretty' and some people will confuse beauty for depth. it's inevitable. in short, this album may be for some people, but is it for you? depends. if 'legends of the fall' is your idea of a great film, if 'phantom of the opera' is your idea of great theatre, if 'gray's anatomy' is your favorite show ever, if spent hours fantasizing about edward after reading 'twilight,' then this is most definitely the album for you.

as for the rest of you who prefer more substance instead of style in your music, well, you can just skip it.
