Amazon.com Young Jeezy is hardly breaking new ground in rapping endlessly about the similarities between the trap game and the rap game. He joins a distinguished line of former 'caine slangers turned MC--Scarface, Jay-Z, the Clipse, Biggie, etc. However, despite the familiarity of Jeezy's topics, this Atlanta rapper has managed to make a bi-coastal splash through the strength of his mic presence and charisma. As the stand-out member of ATL's Boyz N Tha Hood, Jeezy has distinguished himself against the field of contemporary rappers. More rugged than the Game, though not as charming as Cam'ron, Jeezy's work-horse flow and lyrics are draped into evocative street-level realism. Though the Southern influence is obvious in many of the album's bounce and crunk-influenced beats, he shows an impressive diversity of sound selection including on his current street anthems for this summer like"Trap Star," "My Hood," and the sublimely melancholy "Go Crazy." -- Oliver Wang

Another rising rap star with a decent debut July 27, 2005 Musac Critic 42 out of 81 found this review helpful
Young Jeezy joins a group of promising rap stars that seem to be ubiquitous in 2005. That group includes brilliant debuts from The Game and Slim Thug. Besides that, Young Jeezy adds to a group of well rounded rap albums in 2005 including THE DOCUMENTARY (The Game), BE (Common), THE COOKBOOK (Missy Elliott), ALREADY PLATINUM (Slim Thug), just to mention a few. 2005 will mostlikely also see promising albums from Tony Yayo (who has a hit with "So Seductive") as well as Paul Wall (whose "Sittin' Sideways" is picking up steam). With that said, Young Jeezy debut is good enough to join that elite group. The major flaws of LETS GET IT: THUG MOTIVATION 101 is that it grows to long and you can instantly fill Jeezy lose some momentum once it gets towards the end of the album where there is more filler material than substance. Had this album been in between the 45-60 minute range it would've been stronger than what it already is. The beginning of the album, however, is very consistent and almost every track is enjoyable, something that even veterans in the music business sometimes have trouble doing. Also, Jeezy has a unique sound to his voice, making him unique to other MCs (Similar to different sounding voices of Slim Thug and even Mike Jones). Jeezy definitely has more good things working for him than bad things against him. Here is a run down of the tracks: 1. Thug Motivation 101- 4/5; Nice arrangement, nice beat 2. Standing Ovation- 4.5/5; nice beat (drum programming), nice production 3. Gangsta Music- 4/5; nice production, nice hook (the album is very hooky overall which is a positive thing) 4. Let's Get It/ Sky's the Limit- 4/5; another solid track production/rap wise 5. And Then What feat. Mannie Fresh- 4.5/5; personally, one of my favorite tracks of the entire album. I love the "boom boom clap" part of the arrangement as well as Mannie Fresh's ambitious, unique drum programming. 6. Go Crazy- 4.5/5; nice sampling, slightly more "commercial" than some of Jeezy's other raps, nice and "hooky", another solid track. 7. Last of a Dying Breed- 3/5; the first merely average track in my opinion in the album, good for the first 7 songs of the album. 8. My Hood- 4.5/5; one of the first tracks to be in a major key instead of a minor key. The synthesizer line gets stuck in your head. This song also has a pop-rapish hook. 9. Bottom of The Map- 3/5; good production, merely average track. 10. Get Ya Mind Right- 3/5; I like the organ in the production, yet this is one of the weeaker tracks on the album. 11. Trap Star- 4.5/5; exciting production w/ brass synth, catchy hook:" I'm a T-R-A-P S-T-ar". A solid track. 12. Bang- 4/5; solid raps from Jeezy, T. I., nice production, and a nice catchy hook makes this another solid track. 13. Don't Get Caught- 3.5/5; creative production, average track. 14. Soul Survivor feat. Akon- 3/5; Akon provides nice vocals, but the track is a bit too long and bit boring. 15. Trap or Die- 2.5/5; filler material. 16. Tear It Up- 2.5/5; I've never been a fan of Lloyd and I don't really care for his vocal contribution here; it is obvious this is track 16 on the album and not track 1 or 2. The positive aspect of this track is the production is mellower, which contrasts the majority of the production on the album as a whole. 17. That's How Ya Feel- 3/5 18. Talk To Em- 3.5/5; A nice refreshment to a fading album with the sampled harmonized vocals and the unique vocal arrangement; had this been the conclusion of the album, it would've ended on a rather nice note. 19. Air Forces- 2.5; this track could've been cut. Despite minor low points, Young Jeezy I think could possibly stand the test of time in the music industry. He is different and creative and has some 1st rate producers on his side. This isn't the best debut of the year for me, but it is definitely a worthy one. 3.5 stars out of 5. Good job Young Jeezy!
(2.5 stars) Somebody Should've 'Motivated' Me Not To Listen To This! September 7, 2005 Charles L. Hubbert (Milwaukee, WI) 15 out of 30 found this review helpful
Everybody already knows how I feel about Boyz N Da Hood (if not, check out their review on the website!) but I thought maybe Young Jeezy would come up with something better for his solo album Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. I guess I can be wrong about some things too! Granted, I don't have to hear the other three idiots from the group, but Young Jeezy proves absolutely nothing on this disc except my assertion that he's nothing more than a manufactured mouthpiece. Like everybody else, I'm willing to give almost anybody a fair shake when it comes to breaking into the rap business. Although there isn't much from the Dirty South that I can say I'm a fan of (besides the likes Outkast, Geto Boys, and more recently Slim Thug), there isn't much from the East Coast, West Coast, or Midwest that I've like in recent years either. It seems the quality has gone right out the door along with any standards that used to exist within the hip-hop industry in general. Young Jeezy is a perfect example of this mediocrity with so-so production and little thought put into his lyrics. Quoting 2pac and Biggie in the same verse like Jeezy does on both "Go Crazy" and "Last of A Dying Breed" is beyond unacceptable for someone who obviously wants to be respected as a true rap artist. How do you like circus music? It sounds like a straight-up carnival is going on with the song "My Hood." I can't forget about the Halloween music on "Get Ya Mind Right" where he has the nerve to proclaim to be "the realest n*gga in it." How about the mispelling of the title track "Trap Star" where he repeatedly spells it "T-R-A-P-S-T-R"? That's worst than Dan Quayle and his spelling of "P-O-T-A-T-O-E" What about the great decision to have two of the worst singers featured on your album? Well, Jeezy and company felt it was okay to feature Lloyd on the song "Tear It Up" and Akon on "Soul Survivor." The only tolerable songs on the album are the debut single "And Then What" featuring the signature Cash Money production of Mannie Fresh, "Talk To Em" and "Bang" featuring T.I. and Lil Scrappy. But with most of the songs plagued with his horrible adlibs of "Yeeeaaahhhh," "That's Riigghhtt," and a straight jack of MC Eiht's signature "Geeah," it's evident that Young Jeezy needs a little bit more motivation to expand his vocabulary. But like so many other rappers in the game, somehow he is generating a street buzz that will prolong his career well past the 15 minutes of fame he should have had. Let's Get It? Naw, more like Let's Move On!
This guy is WAY over rated January 16, 2006 The Mad Zapper (Parts Unkown) 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
I am from DC and my job had me re-locate to Nashville TN. So of course everyone is big on the southern rappers out here. Nothing wrong with that other than most southern rappers are garbage (not being an a$$ just telling the truth). Everyone seems to be raving about Young Jeezy, saying he's the next greatest, so I listened to the cd out of curiousity, man do I regret that. Dude is just another dime a dozen rapper with a barely average flow and tired production. His lyrical content is pretty weak, rap about something more productive than how much of a street hustler you WERE. You're on one of the biggest rap labels in the industry, and you're a product of it. I'm sick of seeing those stupid snow man t-shirts, that's setting a good example for the young & impressionable. I'll just go ahead and chalk this one up as another disappointment from Def Jam... Hey Def Jam, how about releasing the new Red Man or that ODB cd that still has yet to see the light of day? Please stop giving this 5 stars March 29, 2006 Clean Ol' Dubby (United States of Me) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
It is not deserving of 5 stars...just contemplate the other albums on this site that have 5 star ratings: Illmatic, The Low End Theory, Enter The 36 Chambers, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...is this release on par with these masterpieces? Personally, if a negative rating was possible, I would be as liberal as possible. Young Jeezy is the worst rapper to ever go platinum. Someone answer this: what do you find appealing about him? It certainly isnt his voice, he sounds more raspy than The D.O.C. after his car accident. Lyrics? No, Jeezy can rhyme "fun" and "gun" like any preschooler. I just cant understand how anyone who has an adequate knowledge of hip-hop music (especially 1988-1996) can be a fan of this trash. It pains me that this recording can sell a million records and A Tribe Called Quest's "The Low End Theory" was released more than 10 years ago and to this day is STILL not platinum. Hip-hop today is pretty much dead. Turn your ears to the underground if you want to stay true these days. Vibe to your "Lean wit it rock wit" if you want teenie boppers...

I won't get into namecalling & the type of discourse that fails to lead anyone to a complete understanding of an album (CD) until I break down the reasons why I gave it 1 star. For 1, Young Jeezy's content is completely unoriginal. He seems to be compiling a bit of Jay-Z (who's unoriginal himself) & a sprinkle of Dirty South Crunkism. The types of things he raps about can be found in no less than 5,000 albums released in the past 10 years. The listeners MUST be tired of hearing about how much cocaine & how much of a killa all these MUSICICIANS are. I can;t see how that would continue to be appealing. Secondly, his lyrics are basic, unimaginative, and lack any form of creativity. He stole MC Eight's "Cheah", as have about 20 other rappers, and he says it over and over and over and over again in the background. "Cheah", combined with "That's Riiiight", a couple of other phrases that I can't remember right now, are repeated THROUGHOUT the entire CD. If this type of braindead NOISE (I use the word "noise" because that's all it is---there's no artistry involved in this) is appealing to you, than have at it...get your copy and bob your head for hours. My assessment of this album, is summed up in 2 words: straight garbage.
