Everyone's favorite burlesque troupe and leather corset supporters return to the pop spotlight with second album, the rather cockily titled Doll Domination. It's not clear what arena of the pop world they are trying to dominate, as few can claim to be as overtly skanky since Christina Aguilera's "dirrty" days and none are as completely and totally manufactured as the Dolls (although Danity Kane comes to mind), who branched out from stripping in a series of calculated moves to become famous that included a reality program, a Vegas show, and some classy clothing.
Doll Domination immediately plays its best hand off the bat with lead single "When I Grow Up," an electro-pop song about vapidity that signifies everything that is wrong with the Dolls' music and sounds eerily similar to Basement Jaxx's far superior 2003 track "Plug It In.". Bouncy synth lines and thudding bass provided by A-list producer? Check. Voices Auto-Tuned to perfection? Check. Lyrics about being famous and rich that include such Hilton-esque lines as "you can talk about me / `cause I'm a hot topic"? Check. Sure, it's catchy, but if you're looking for any sort of depth or anything more than a guilty pleasure, you're not going to get it here.
Unbelievably, the album continues for fifteen (!) more songs, all of them marking a low point in the 2008 music year and none of them approaching the single marketability of "When I Grow Up." Snoop Dogg's entirely appropriate guest spot on "Bottle Pop" (after all, he did host a few Girls Gone Wild) is one of the weaker ones of his career to say the least, and the track's lackluster chorus deflate any energy he might have afforded them. Although the Dolls didn't hold back on production, which benefits from help by Timbaland and Darkchild, or guest spots from R. Kelly, Ne-Yo, and Missy Elliot, no amount of help is able to give the Dolls any sort of identity separate from the obvious "models playing as singers." Main singer Nicole Scherzinger's vocals come off as vanilla diva pop, and while the beats are definitely club-ready, there is nothing mind-blowing enough here to qualify the Pussycat Dolls as anything more than artificial pop stars propped up by an industry desperate to make a buck.

After wating for like what seem like forever the dolls are back and showing that they still got it.The Dolls will keep you dancing from track 1-16. This Cd is a must have for Old & New PCD fans.

The Pussycat Doll's second album, 'Doll Domination', is a decent follw-up album. I don't think it really lives up to the hype or even the title, though. With a title like 'Doll Domination' I expect each track to be really good, radio friendly and just mind blowingly good. Yet, some tracks are just okay while others come off as nothing more than a purr and are timid.
The Good: PCD is at their best on songs where they are singing something upbeat and being a bit provocative. Some of the best tracks on the album are 'Magic', 'Elevator', 'Whatchamacallit' and 'When I Grow Up' because they're fun and dance/pop orientated and very entertaining. I enjoyed these songs because they weren't what you hear on the radio and have the same production of some of the group's best songs from their previous release.
The Bad: There are a few things that kept this from being a five-star release. First, yet again we're faced with Nicole (the lead doll) pretty much being featured throughout the album. I can only hear and pick out her voice on most tracks. This was something of a let down because on the special edition, we are treated to the other members of the group having songs they're featured on and, to no one's surprise, they can sing as well! Yet, this CD is more 'Nicole Scherzinger feat. The Pussycat Dolls' than anything else. This probably contributes to some songs simply not standing out from the others. Second complaint is that while the slow songs are okay, on this album, they simply sound like B-side tracks. There was something off about the production and that excitement and edge captured in the upbeat songs are just lost when the tempo is slowed. Every song isn't good. Probably, I'd say this is an average dance/pop album and not all the songs vibe and go well together. There was more than one or two tracks that sounded like B-sides to me with a lack of spirit and effort.
In all, it's a good album, but could be better. I enjoyed the dance and up-beat tracks, would have appreciated hearing some other voices featured on the songs, but otherwise, better than a lot of other CDs released in this genre. Check it out.
