Twenty years after the fact January 22, 2000 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Seger released this album when I was a junior in high school. I didn't listen to it much then; not enough head-banging for my tastes at the time. Being older and wiser these days, I love this album. "Against the Wind" is I think the second best song Seger has ever written. "Like a Rock" was my favorite but once he sold out to Chevy it's much harder to listen too. "Shinin' Brightly," and "You'll Accomp'ny Me" are also just outstanding. One thing you have to say about Bob Seger: he writes and performs his music honestly and with passion. If you're looking for canned, over-produced music, this awesome album is not for you.
A GREATEST HITS COLLECTION February 24, 2004 B Ardell Young (Camden, SC United States) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This album was the high water mark of Seger's career, though many of us didn't realize it. "Against The Wind" was the third of a four album run that permanently established Seger as major force in rock music. For a while, Seger towered over everyone in rock music, including Bruce Springsteen, but less product, albums and tours, allowed Seger's star to fade leading to an almost has-been perception by the early 1990s. This album is a brilliant showcase of Seger's talent and a sad reminder of what could have been, if not for missed opporunities. It is one of the strongest records ever made. There are no "bad" songs and several classic hits. In many ways, it is Seger's third Greatest Hits album.
Only one worth the money April 23, 2004 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is perhaps the only cd that I have ever bought that was worth the money. I dished out the cash, primarily for "Her Strut," and over a year later, it still sits in my cd player. I'm 18 and am flooded with today's garbage---and there is still nothing like good ol' Seger. This cd is definitely worth the money and the music's great!
***1/2 - typical Bob Seger June 7, 2004 Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) 9 out of 14 found this review helpful
Typical in the sense that Bob Seger's albums almost always include a number of excellent songs and a handful of forgettable ones as well. "Against The Wind" is the last of Seger's "classic" albums. Originally issued in 1980, it features one of Seger's very best ballads, the simple but superbly melodic "You'll Accomp'ny Me", as well as the slow rock of "Fire Lake", the title track (another ballad), and a couple of grinding rockers, most notably "Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight" and "Her Strut". And then there's all the filler...bland, formulaic numbers like "Long Twin Silver Line" and "The Horizontal Bop" (honestly!). So, as is the case with most Bob Seger albums, this one is mostly for hardcore fans. There's a lot of good music here, but all of it is available on Seger's two "Greatest Hits" albums, and the best of the best is on the superb 1981 live album "Nine Tonight" as well.
Seger Struts July 20, 2001 Thomas Magnum (NJ, USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band changed their sound a bit for the release of 1980's Against The Wind. While the album included songs like the great "Her Strut", "Horizontal Bop" and "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight" which are rockers in the classic Seger vein, much of the album takes on a country tone. Having co-written The Eagles' number one hit "Heartache Tonight" which has a country rock flavor, Mr. Seger follows that course on the album. The title track is a lamenting song that has a somber tone while "You'll Accomp'ny Me" is a pretty and longing. The best song on the album is the powerful and foreboding "Fire Lake" which Eagles Don Henley & Glenn Frey return the favor by lending back up vocals. Against The Wind become Mr. Seger's one and only number one album and spent six weeks at the top.
