    Album Description
Multi platinum Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Sammy Hagar, releases his first album since 2000. Sammy's 2008 release, Cosmic Universal Fashion, marks the first official release for Loud and Proud Records, a Roadrunner Records imprint focusing on heritage artists. The title track and first single, 'Cosmic Universal Fashion' was written as an online collaboration between Hagar and a young Iraqi rock band in Baghdad. Released via Sammy's website RedRocker.com and already a YouTube sensation, the video was produced in the same spirit as the classic Van Halen video for 'Right Now'.

1 out of 5 stars Oh Jeez.....   November 25, 2008

    OK!!
    Who stole the Red Rocker?!?!?!
Before I rant, let's get one thing straight, ok?
I have always been a Sammy fan. I have been to more Sammy shows than most.
    I love the guy. But....
This disc doesn't rock! It is a commercial piece of junk. It's a little better than the last weenie that he put out, but just barely.
Sam, if you are gonna be known as the Red Rocker, then ROCK! PLEASE!!!
Don't tell me that after all these years of killer rock and roll, you have sold out?!?!
If ya' need the money that bad, I'll loan you a few bux!!
Just quit putting out these cream cheese tunes!
Take the time, and write good music like you used to do.
    Ok, here goes....
    1) COSMIC UNIVERSAL FASHION - Rappy, Dancy, Crappy. Does NOT rock!
    2) PSYCO VERTIGO - The best song on the disc...Reminds me of the HSAS BAND.
    3) PEEPHOLE - Another good one! Good old Red Rocker rock and roll!!
    4) LOUD - An attempt at redneck rock. Lyrics are plain STUPID! "LOUD LIKE A HURRICANE, LOUD LIKE A ROARIN' TRAIN??" C'mon man....
    5) FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT... - Of all the tunes to copy... Blech!
    6) SWITCH ON THE LIGHT - A silly song if I ever heard one. Musta wrote this one in the crapper.
    7) WHEN THE SUN DON'T SHINE - The Rednekker strikes again! Jusy cain't git it outa yer system, huh Sammy?
    8) 24365 - Bad attempt at a funk song. I mean BAD!
    9) I'M ON A ROLL - A NASCAR commercial plain and simple. With stupid lyrics to boot. A third grader could have written these.
10)DREAMS/CABO - Ahhhh...It's over! Even a classic Sammy tune can't save this mess.
    Sorry Sam.

2 out of 5 stars Still in party mode   November 20, 2008

Seems Sammy is enjoying the party way too much to devote any real effort to the song writing part. He gives it the old AC/DC recycled idea treatment and if my one time listen to Livin it up serves my memory right, this is no better. There's not a single track here that I'd want to hear again. Wouldn't you also say that penning just eight (poor) new tunes for a new album is a bit lame? Oh well, I'll just go give the albums Marching - Not 4 and his old stuff another spin.

Edit: Whoa, 8 negative ratings already for this review in less than a week. I'm a fan, I've got all the albums on cd and vinyl and also two dvd's, so c'mon, don't ask your friends to come give me negative ratings, Sammy. I know how you've said disapproving reviews make you mad. This is just my honest opinion and my last name is not Roth or Van Halen either.

1 out of 5 stars Red Rocker bombs again   November 25, 2008

No doubt about it. Sammy puts on the best live shows ever, but most of his success is from his old stuff. I've been a fan since Montrose, so I was hoping that he would bounce back after his last dud but, alas I was wrong. If he plays any of this junk in concert, time to take a bathroom break. Put down the J's and booze, Sammy and get rockin' again or you'll just become a nostalga act. Bring on Chickenfoot!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the last one   November 18, 2008

Years ago when Van Hagar reunited I was mad that Sam said they should just release music digitally. I had hoped that they could reconcile and put out more music as Van Halen. That didn't happen but I am glad Sammy changed his mind about putting out music on discs. I am an old school music buyer who would rather have a shiny new case and artwork in my hands. That said, I find this CD to be very enjoyable and rocking. This is more the sound I enjoy from Sammy and I think his version of Fight For Your Right is much more listenable than the original. This is a CD that left me wanting more so I can't wait for the Chicken Foot release...or whatever they decide to call themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Sammy Returns to Rock   November 23, 2008

A devoted rock and roller friend of mine said that he stopped listening to Hagar when Sammy "became Jimmy Buffet," a reference to Sam's last two albums with the Wabos. I have to admit, the last two outings did listen like grade C versions of "Cabo Wabo" and "Mas Tequila," with only one track between the two making it onto my replay list on the old iPod. So, when I heard about Sam's Cosmic Universal Fashion and sampled the tracks, I was excited to hear a return to the Red Rocker rock and roll roots. And, generally, Sammy succeeds with this new release; yet it still doesn't quite hit the mark for me.

Yes, there is a much harder edge to this CD than the last few Wabos albums and it is nice to hear some metalistic guitar work (portions sound remarkably like Eddie V) and the pounding drive. But if you are looking for the blend of that hard driving rock and Sammy's more melodic side, this isn't the album for you. There's very little melody here and that can be OK, but the result is that few of the tracks are particularly memorable.

The title track is really interesting, and while "Loud" has its moments, there is a passion lacking, something not helped by the lyrics feeling as if they'd come straight off an album from the 1970s. Sam throws in his remake of the Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right to Party," one of his live show staples, and ballad-y live treatments of "Dreams" and "Cabo Wabo" which are pleasing if a little distant.

There is nothing either terribly remarkable or terribly offensive about the remaining tracks, save for "24365," which actually sounds like the Saturday Night Live skit starring Eddie Murphy when Eddie--as James Brown--sings about gettin' in the hot tub. Hands down it should never have made the cut.

All in all, this isn't a one-listen CD. It's pleasant enough, but it isn't anywhere near the level of Sam's best work. I'm still waiting for something that gets me moving the way "Little White Lie" did, but this will tide me over until we get there.
