1 out of 5 stars Greatest jazz record of all time packaged with tremendous flaw...   January 5, 2009
    J. Brent Uptain (Birmingham, AL United States)
Just doing my part to make sure Amazon shoppers know this product is damaged from day one. I'm giving it a low score, because I figure if the average score is low enough, they'll check out some reviews to see why. And here's why:
The cardboard pockets where the discs are housed scratch the discs beyond playability.
I bought a copy from my local CD store, took it home, and couldn't even play the discs. They skipped on several tracks.
I took it back to the CD store with the intention of exchanging it. I recalled they had another in stock. The sales associate opened the other copy to examine its condition - Guess what. It was worse.
So, please be warned. Until Sony/Columbia rectify the packaging issue, you are undertaking a tremendous risk in buying this product.
Sure the book is beautiful, as are the other goodies included. After all, this is THE JAZZ ALBUM, and it deserves such a lavish treatment. But they made one tremendous flaw in the packaging.
FYI, I couldn't say if the blue vinyl is up to par or not. I never played it

4 out of 5 stars A great package. Agreed -- Some things are not perfect   January 4, 2009
    Mark Kozera (Michigan)
Happily I got this set at a nice discount at a local retailer. Therefore the outer case is in perfect condition. For musical content and historical importance this box set can't be beat - and yes, the original album deserves the lavish treatment presented here IMO, despite the few detractor's claims to the contrary. As said, the music is indispensable -- the extras and artifacts lend depth to the legend. The interior items are rated as follows:

The 2 CDs and DVD: Musically they satisfy. The bonus cuts sound excellent. Better than any bootleg versions I have heard. The disc pockets integrated with the LP cover seemed a bit odd. Although slick in presentation, the CDs/DVD should have been housed to better protect the discs, as they did arrive with surface marks generated from the disc pockets.

The LP: The music sounds very good on my Sota turntable. Deep and rich with greater dimension and detail than the reissue CD. The blue vinyl is a nice touch. The one critique: the LP itself is slightly dished and warped and suffers from some non-fill issues at the outer edges of the record - a common problem with specialty colored vinyl releases, because the vinyl has a tendency to harden too quickly before flowing evenly in the stamper. This would seem to account for the surface noise, although it's not overbearing. By far not the worst high-end reissue I have purchased, but the not the best. The music makes up for the production problems.

Not always sure if the "art house" creativity of these box sets are in the best interest of the music, but on the whole, this is a very nice collectable. Clearly conceived to grab the attention of both the art community and jazz collector crowd. I'd say I'm pretty happy with the one I got.

2 out of 5 stars Great Box Set but Horrible Packaging!   January 4, 2009
    R. Campbell (Fairfield, CT)
As others have said - This is an incredible box set, but the method of packaging the DVD and CDs is horrible. All of my CD's and the DVD are scratched and my Disc 1 won't play track 6 due to the scratches.

I do hope Sony will provide replacement discs.

3 out of 5 stars great concept, bad vinyl   January 2, 2009
    Charles von Nordeck (Baltimore, MD)
Kind Of Blue is musically timeless. The concept of this package is terrific. Adding the studio outtakes was a nice touch. This record has been re-issued more times than one can imagine, so adding those extra tracks was long overdue. But the real reason for my comments is the disappointing quality of the vinyl LP. I just wish Sony/CBS had some quality control in terms of the blue vinyl LP. My first copy had bubbles which created bad pops and surface noise. I just received my replacement copy today and it is worse. More bubbles, pops and this one is warped. I hope can get another copy as easily. Maybe the third time it will be better.

A note on the packing job by Amazon...the first one came well padded in the oversize box but the second one had no padding at all, just shrink-wrapped on a bigger piece of cardboard. An invitation to a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Should have been a bit better   December 29, 2008
    Cemil Gandur
This is 50th Anniversary reissue of one of the most important recordings of the 20th century, and as such, must be judged to the highest of standards.

I was disappointed in the LP reissue. Why didn't they do 45rpm reissues for such a great album? Even the Classic 200-grm reissue sounds better. I've yet to compare the CD to my KoB SACD, but the LP is too bright, the drums are too loud and the bass and piano are pushed to the back.

I know this is nit-picking, but since this set is likely to be purchased by people who already have this material, this translates as a both job. They should have handed it over to the Analogue Productions team to do.
