Amazon.com essential recording Marvin Gaye's 1973 album, Let's Get It On, is a marvel of sexual blandishment every bit the artistic equal of, say, John Donne's best seduction poems. The difference, though, is that the poetry here isn't in the verse--which gets a trifle clichéd--but in the supple pulse of the grooves and in the aching need of Gaye's sensual voice. The marvelous title track, a No. 1 hit, riffs on the earlier hook of Gaye's "What's Going On" to reach a more primal climax, and everything else here--a steamy swirl of sax, strings, and backing voices--is sexy, beautiful, and simply sublime. --David Cantwell
Album Description 2008 reissue of his 1973 album Let's Get It On is his follow up to his 1970 political concept album, What's Going On? This CD includes 15 bonus tracks. Gaye left social concerns behind for those of a more initimate nature with this album which was a huge success. Originally released in 1973, this album broke new ground gaining its place in history as one of the most sexual albums ever recorded, laying the basis for every slow jam ever after and making Gaye both socially concerned and sexy, a potent commercial combination.

Shows the virtue of mix tapes and "best of" collections June 6, 2000 Tim Lieder (New York, NY) 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
I bought this CD for the first song. It is one of the best songs ever written and one that emphasises romanticism over sexuality (ironic is that when Marvin Gaye sings about sex, you know he's singing about love. When Barry WHite sings about love, you know he's singing about sex - heck, you are in the bedroom with him.) and after seeing High Fidelity I needed to have this song in my head.Unfortunately the rest of the album is mediocre. There are two other really good songs ("Distant Lovers" and "Just To Keep You Satisfied") but the rest of the songs are forgettable, mediocre or just plain awful. "You Sure Love to Ball" should have been a "lost" track. "Keep Getting it On" is just banking on the success of "Let's Get it On" and repeats all the great riffs of the original song, relating everything to a peacenik mentality that I suppose was popular when America was engaged in a stupid war, but is really dated now. The other three songs are forgettable. So buy it if you really love the title song, but note that the three good songs on this CD are on "best of" collections. If you want a Marvin Gaye cd that is consistantly excellent, buy "What's Going On"
Marvin Gaye takes the concept album to another plateau. May 3, 2000 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
Don't fret about the 4 star rating I'm giving this album. Incomparisson to his other concept albums, Lets get it on is slightlybelow his masterpeice concept albums what's gong on and the later I want you. I still love this album but it simply isn't as pleasing as the other two. Marvin's studio version of distant lover simply doesn't capture the magic of the live version on his greatest hits album. Still, Lets get it on is a marvelous album. Which uses the concept of concentual sex to push himself musically where most artist dream of going. The songs Let's get it on and Keep gettin it on are examples of pure Marvin Gaye at his best. If i should die tonight, Come get to this and you're sure to ball are arrogant sexual sleepers that only marvin fans will love. But without a doubt the finest song on this album is the sweet ballad Just to keep you satisfied. A song that was co-written by his ex- wife Anna Gordy. The words are so honest it feels as though he was going through a break up while he is singing this song. Listen to the tracks final words. "We tried, God knows we tried. Now it's too late." A must for any music lover.
More than a seduction CD... February 10, 2000 yygsgsdrassil (Crossroads America) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I know this album had an influence in my life--from long weekends in the dormitory missing my out of town girlfriend("Distant Lover" sometimes made me feel better, sometimes it didn't) to those blue lighted frat parties where we freshmen guys thought that we could get with one of the junior or senior coeds (everybody sang "AAAAaaah baby" with Marvin on the title track and the party was on)...and then as I got older and understood what Marvin was talking about ('Cause we know all the words to all the songs and mindlessly sing along with them, but never really connect them to our own lives, really...am I right?) in "Just To Keep You Satisfied" and how his situation seemed to divide his soul even more and how my situation was seeming to parallel his. Many call this Marvin's outright seduction CD, well, that may be true but, between the lines you can feel much more... you can feel his struggle to remain an individual in a despotic system (Motown, the U. S.of A.), you can feel the rumblings of Marvin and Anna's age difference take its toll on the duo, particularly with Marvin garnering attention from younger women(--it seems no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors), you can hear father time knocking at his own 40something door. What happened, of course, is that Marvin did what most artists do when several personal struggles envelope their very being--he created a perfect piece of work..this "seduction CD". And, fortunately for us, we are able to also relive some of our own moments, good and not so good, some involving romance, some not, with Marvin's work.
What Can I Say? October 13, 2000 Sean C. (Riverside, CA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is, no doubt, one of the greatest sensual/soothing records of all time. It's constantly in rotation in my CD player, matter of fact, I'm listening to it right now. To all Marvin's true fans I would also suggest picking up his 4 CD "Master" collection. It's tight, especially disc 3 & 4. Anyway, if you haven't done so yet, pick up "Let's Get It On," you'll be glad you did. Thanks, Sean C.
