Classic Pretenders album gets re-release as part of "Flashback" series from Rhino-same mastering November 23, 2008 Wayne Klein (My Little Blue Window, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Released just after "The Last of the Independents", "Isle of View" features an unusual apporach for The Pretenders--strings added to an acoustic live performance (although they are missing from "Private Life"). Featuring the longest running version of the line up (Hynde, drummer Martin Chambers who had rejoined the band and former Katydids guitarist Adam Seymour who would be the first guitarist since original guitar player James Honeyman-Scott to co-write material for the band on the next two albums),it's an unusual apporach that helps the band reinvent classics such as "Lovers of Today". The band is in top form throughout the performance (which also aired on MTV originally back in the day as part of its "Unplugged" series of concerts). I picked this up recently to replace my original version of the CD which had been damaged. It sounds the same to me and near as I can tell hasn't been remastered (which is good news as most remasters are too loud, compressed and often can sound awful compared to their original versions). Fans who want to replace their original or never got around to getting this should pick this up. The price is right and the quality of the music, performances and mastering is top notch. It's a pity that there aren't any bonus tracks ("Creep" was performed at the same session and is only available on the "Pirate Radio" boxed set)but for the price, it's a good deal.
