Amazon.com The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Eder Goes Beyond Wildhorn and Shines February 19, 2003 Derek J. A. Thomas (TAmpa, FL USA) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Linda Eder's new CD is a fabulous trip through the Great White Way. Favorite tracks: Edelweiss and subtle and beautifully sung, I Am What I Am is full of power and emotion, Some People is technically perfect, and The Impossible Dream may be the best version ever recorded. It's just magnificent. Also don't miss two beautiful songs that have become standards in Linda's concerts: What Kind of Fool and Don't Rain on My Parade. The CD is what lots of fans have been waiting for: a move beyond the writings of her husband Frank Wildhorn. And the result is the quintessential Broadway CD. Perfect.
Broadway's Best - Linda Eder-style February 20, 2003 J. J. Jakubowski (OC, California) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
Linda Eder - Broadway; She is what she Is! - Pure "Gold", the "Impossible Dream" comes true... Incredible as ever, fantastic, you HAVE to listen to, experience and feel the passion - there aren't words enough to do justice to what Linda Eder has done with this music and her incredibly gifted voice! She soars! There's no more comparing to Babs or Judy or anyone else - Linda Eder is in with the best of the best in her class. A review of Linda's second album, years ago was written up in the Streisand Fan Mag - "Like Butter" and it noted, can't get enough Babs - turn onto Linda Eder and her incredible voice. Well the time has come and people will say that of Linda. There has to be a follow up "Broadway - Volume II". The clearest voice, beautiful and sustained singing. Fantastic tribute to the composers and knock your socks-off orchestra! One minute powerful and over the top, the next, emotional, gentle and poetic - sentimental. Some old classics and standards, some original and new - ALL done as the very best! There is no comparison! Buy this one - you'll be glad you did. Linda Eder is intoxicating! Bravo! Encore! and, thank you Linda and Frank!
Broadway My Way February 18, 2003 Ellen Jacobs (Union, NJ United States) 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
February 18, 2003 Linda Eder's latest solo album, Broadway My Way, is by far the most incredible collection of Broadway music I have ever heard. You won't find many of the same songs that have been recorded over and over through the years by other great female vocalists. What you will find are selections carefully chosen by Linda (some with a "little" push from her huge fan base!), each one being special to her in its own way. You will learn so much about what prompted her to choose the songs she did by reading her carefully prepared liner notes. Each arrangement has a special touch which makes listening a unique and new experience. The selections demonstrate how this amazing singer can move from the softest emotion-filled touch ("I'll Be Seeing You," "Anthem," "On The Street Where You Live," "Gold," "Unusual Way," "The Impossible Dream," "Edelweiss," "A New Life") to the biggest belt you've ever heard ("What Kind of Fool Am I?," "Some People," "Don't Rain On My Parade," "Man Of La Mancha," "I Am What I Am"). Without reservation, I highly recommend this album to every fan of Broadway music as well as to every fan of music in general. Linda Eder will not disappoint you with the incredible Broadway My Way. Congratulations, Linda!
Spectacular, Original..even Groundbreaking February 24, 2003 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
For years, Linda Eder has been compared to legendary singers like Judy Garland and Ella Fitgerald, but the one singer who many think Eder most closely resembles vocally is Barbra Streisand..(they both share a similar tone and range). With the release of "Broadway, My Way", Eder breaks away from all comparisons, firmly establishing a style all her own, and, incredibly enough, putting her own mark on these broadway classics. Already, this CD and its performer are receiving its share of accolades. The day after the CD went on sale, Eder performed for the third time to a sellout crowd at Carnegie Hall and received numerous standing ovations and critical acclaim, including a rave review in Variety. Her other two engagements there were greeted with similar raves and ovations. This isn't surprising given that Broadway, My Way represents something of a groundbreaking achievement. There are a lot of great broadway songs, but finding songs that haven't been recorded to death, or recorded with the same arrangements over and over has to be incredibly tough. Not only does Eder find several gems that have been passed over by others...the powerful and timely "Anthem" from Chess, the showstopping, spine-tingling "I Am What I Am" from La Cage Aux Folles, and an absolutely etheral "Edleweiss", but Eder also tackles a number of songs men made famous and makes them sound like they were written specifically for her. Theres "On the Street Where You Live" sung in an exquisite, feminine soprano, with crystalline notes held in a smooth as silk vibrato. Eder IMO is one of the best broadway belters EVER, and brings new meaning to "The Impossible Dream" and "What Kind of Fool Am I?" "Anthem" will send chills down your spine (as will many others on this CD). Arrangements are all fresh and original, with lush orchestrations that perfectly compliment Eder's voice. To be sure, this CD is not without its risks, but they all pay off 100% and more. Eder tackles "Don't Rain on My Parade", sending it to new heights with a powerful, controlled belt. She has received such acclaim for her rendition of this song in newspaper reviews and broadway forumns that it appears some of Babs fans are becoming overly defensive. They need not worry. Eder breaks the mold with this CD, showing the extent of her incredible range, adding a certain sexiness and warmth, and firmly establishing herself as one of the best (if not THE BEST) singer alive today.
Great voice, mediocre cd February 19, 2003 16 out of 29 found this review helpful
Eder is one of the finest talents to come along in a long time. All of her previous efforts have gone heavy on the Frank Wildhorn tunes (she is after all his wife). So finally we get a cd with the majority of songs written by other writers. FINALLY. Her choices are very interesting and she is in great voice, but some problems. Why is there only an excerpt of What Kind Of Fool Am I, clocking in at 1:39. At first I thought it was part of a medley, but it is not. Extremely strange. Additionally, why are Gold, Unusual Way, A New Life and Man of La Mancha on this recording?? These songs appear on earlier Eder cds. So in essence, we are basically getting 9 new songs and 4 songs we already own (albeit, different vocals, but nearly identical). Do we really need to have a carbon copy of the song Gold released one year after the original, and far superior, version was released just a year ago. If Eder wished to record a Jekyll & Hyde song, how about This Is The Moment, a song that she didn't sing in the 3 other commercially available versions of J&H. Of all of the great bway songs out there to choose from, how awful for fans that they have to purchase a cd which contains 4 songs they already own. Let's hope we get a better cd next time, one that has all new songs, with songs NOT written by Wildhorn and which does not rehash recordings from the past.
