Not exactly "Immaculate".... February 23, 2005 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
And let me tell you why. Most all of these songs are not the original versions. Many have been remixed ( read the liner notes, you'll see Shep Pettibone credited ), and many have been shortened. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In the case of the later hits Express Yourself and Like a Prayer, I actually prefer the remixed "house" style versions remixed here by Pettibone. In the case of the earlier hits, it's butchery, plain and simple. Into the Groove is a travesty, a remixed shell of the orginal. It sounds sped up, and barely gets to the "now I know you're mine" part ( my favourite part, no less ) before the plug is pulled and we are on to the next hit. Holiday, Lucky Star and Borderline get the same treatment also. And that's just the singles that ARE here. SO MUCH is missing, so many hits, major and minor, like Dress You Up, that are not included. This could have ( and indeed SHOULD have ) been a two-disc set, with all the original hits, intact, as they were released. As it is, it is a perfectly acceptable, if economical and flawed, introduction to Madonna's early hits. What this woman needs is a box set. Plain and simple.
Absolutely Wonderful April 28, 2002 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
These songs are timeless, and in some cases, infamous! How can you not love these songs? It's impossible. Anyone who listens to this album will be hooked! This album is the reason I am a Madonna fan today, as it was my introduction to her music. And all of these songs were hits! Check out the peak positions of the songs included on this CD on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart:1. Holiday #16 2. Lucky Star #4 3. Borderline #10 4. Like A Virgin #1 5. Material Girl #2 6. Crazy For You #1 7. Into The Groove (did not chart because it was not released as a single, but was still a massive radio hit!) 8. Live To Tell #1 9. Papa Don't Preach #1 10. Open Your Heart #1 11. La Isla Bonita #4 12. Like A Prayer #1 13. Express Yourself #2 14. Cherish #2 15. Vogue #1 16. Justify My Love #1 17. Rescue Me #9 And those were not even all of her hits up until that point! Those NOT included are: Angel #5, Dress You Up #5, True Blue #3, Who's That Girl #1, Causing A Commotion #2, Oh Father #20, Keep It Together #8, Hanky Panky #10. Madonna knows how to deliver good pop songs. These songs will bring back memories for you... Get it now!!
A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY BIG POP MUSIC FAN June 16, 2002 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
Madonna. One of the most famous and well-known women ever. One of the most successful and notrized pop megastars since Elvis,The Beatles, and her '80s rival Micheal Jackson. Yet while Madonna's life is often talked about, her music is never really talked about as readily. It should because anyone who thinks that Madonna is just a barely-talented media tool should seriously listen to this now- classic 1990 greatest hits retrospective of Ms. Ciccone's glory period(1983-1989)."Immaculate Collection" is full of first-rate pop. "Lucky Star","Holliday","Borderline",and "Like A Virgin" are likable, simple pop tunes that are catchy and light without becoming disposable or corny. The vampy,Nile Rodgers-produced "Material Girl" is another high-point as Madonna plays an eighties Marilyn Monroe. The controversy-ready "Papa Don't Preach"(recently rerecorded by Kelly Osborne),"Open Your Heart",and the '60s-like "Cherish" are even more noteworthies from Madonna's '80s catolouge. "Into The Groove" is definitely one of the best dance songs ever (curiously never properly released as a single) along with the provocative "Like A Prayer"(I love that video!;the video version isn't the version on here),the brazen "Express Yourself",and the ballad "Crazy For You" all make "Immaculate" an even more worthy compliation. The unforgettable "Vouge"(a signature hit) and the steamy,Lenny Kravitz-produced "Justify My Love"(This beat is actually a Public Enemy track) and "Rescue Me",a solid dance tune. Questionable ommissions on here are "Dress You Up"(one of her best singles),"Angel","Causing A Commotion","Who's That Girl?", "Burning Up",and "Oh Father".But again, they can only fit,so many tracks in. "The Immaculate Collection" belongs in every major pop fans CD collection.
Remixes Throughout July 14, 1998 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
If you're thinking that this might be a good collection of Madonna's hits up to 1990, you're only half right. Sure, most of the songs are hits, but if you plan on hearing the ORIGINAL versions of these songs, you're out of luck. Almost everything here is remixed, rerecorded, or just totally unlike the versions made famous through radio airplay and on MTV. If you have all the early Madonna albums and singles, then this CD might hold some interest as a sort of dance club mix, but if you're like most of us who want only the big hits in their original versions, pass this one up.
Madonna at her best! March 21, 2000 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the one of of best compilations of pop music! These are the best songs of the Material Girl!17 powerful songs, ranging from 1983 to 1990 are included in this powerful compilation, from LIKE A VIRGIN(her first number one)to her daring and controversial JUSTIFY MY LOVE.Other gems you will find in THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION are MATERIAL GIRL,LUCKY STAR,BORDERLINE,VOGUE,INTO THE GROVE,EXPRESS YOURSELF,to name a few.... It also features fun ballads like CRAZY FOR YOU and LIVE TO TELL.The only thing that may bother some listeners about this collection is that some of the songs are remastered. Some expressed anger towards this, others were happy with the remixes. This is a CD for all fans of Madonna. If you are not a Madonna fan, this CD will get you hooked! All the songs on this CD have something special to offer and fans will really relish them.Madonna is a unique artist and all her songs display creativity. This is the type of CD you can hear almost every day!The songs in this collection are never tiresome and will always remain popular and will truly stand the test of time!
