Great voice, but concept is bothersome... September 19, 2000 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I think Christina has a terrific voice, I mean, she sounds better than Mariah Carey did when she was good. This is not a bad CD, and it's not a great CD. It's difficult to explain. The way I feel about it is this: I don't feel that Christina 'feels' what she is singing when she sings in Spanish. Anyone can enunciate Spanish. It's not a difficult language, and yes, Christina's voice is technically great, but it's nothing for her to sing some Spanish lyrics. I just don't feel any emotion in it as she sings. She clearly doesn't understand what she's singing. She can just pronounce the words and sing it beautifully, but there's nothing behind it. Selena was a singer who didn't know Spanish, but you felt the emotion in her words when she sang in Spanish. And not to mention that glorious voice. I guess it comes with time or experience, or something. I don't know what it was that Selena had, but Christina doesn't have that emotion in her voice to make me feel the beauty of the Spanish.I do love the song Mi Reflejo (Reflection). It's a terrific song in any language. Christina's voice is divine, but once again, I'd much rather hear her sing it in English because the words are powerful and I feel that she sings it with emotion, not just because she has a great voice and can sing Spanish lyrics. Anyway, I'm not bashing Christina. I'm more than happy to give her credit - yes, girl, you can sing, but the whole idea of a Spanish album by her is kind of irksome. It also annoyed me to see all of the credits and linear notes in Spanish. Now we all know Christina didn't write that. She just had someone translate it for her. I just don't understand what the purpose of this album was. To prove that she wants to acknowledge her Spanish roots? So what your father is Ecuadorian? My mother is Panamanian...your point? If she wants to prove that she's not a pop princess, then come out with an album that proves otherwise but not a whole Spanish album, because it seems phony, and show-offy to me.
Mi Reflejo is a Grammy-winning-must-have latin hit! May 13, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Christina's Debut spanish album surpased expectations and sold millions of copies in its first months. It was #1 latin cd on the billboard charts for more than 11 weeks. It earned a latin grammy even when it was running against latin superstars like Paulina Rubio and Thalia.
Mi Reflejo includes five translations from Christina's debut album (Reflection, Genie in a bottle, What a girl wants, Come on over, I turn to you) And also six completely new songs. Six of the eleven tracks are ballads, 2 have a latin taste to them and three are pop.
Christina released five videos for this album. Its one of my favorite albums and I highly reccomend it to people all ages. (believe me, you will enjoy this album even if you cant understand the language)
Beautiful songs from a beautiful singer! September 12, 2000 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Even though I do not speak Spanish, I bought this album because I knew that Christina's beautiful voice would make it enjoyable. And I was right. The songs are beautiful, whether they are slow or fast. You do not have to speak Spanish to enjoy this album!
Same, predictable, standard pop only in a "latin" package October 3, 2000 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Many of the hits on her English CD don't really sound well in Spanish. The record company should have just paid writers to make new material instead of rehashing the same old songs. This is just the same pop fluff from her previous CD offered in a new package and with a few different sounding latin artists to make it sound "authentic". This CD reeks of pretentiousness to me and I don't believe Christina is "exploring" anything about herself here, it's just an opportunity to ham it up in a new language... (would this CD have been taken as seriously if someone without a spanish last name had made it?) Besides, would she have even come out with a spanish CD if it wasn't the "in" thing to do right now? I just hope she comes out with an Irish CD soon to honor her mother's heritage (U know, the person who actually CARED about Christina).
overall pretty good, but could have been even better September 12, 2000 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Christina sounds pretty good singing in spanish. Not perfect, but her first attempt at it is not bad. The album contains 11 songs. The big problem for me is that 5 of them are remakes from her first cd. At first I heard that the album was supposed to be all new material with maybe 1 or 2 remakes. With that being said I still like the album. Of the new tracks two are uptempo and 4 are ballads, with one being a duet with a latin singer. As usual christina's voice is in top form, and that is more than enough to make this a wothwhile purchase.
