Awesome for Madonna fans and 80s fans November 15, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am a new Madonna fan and I decided to start collecting her albums from the beginning, with this album. I am also quite a big fan of 80s music, so this was a great treat for me. There isn't a song I don't like on the album."Lucky Star" This is a really good song to dance to. It kind of reminds me of a fusion of 80s pop and something from the Far East. I love Madonna's vocals, and I could dance to this song for hours. 8/10 "Borderline" This is my favorite song on this album. I love the beat, the lyrics are the most meaningful out of these songs, about a girl in a crappy relationship she can't let go of. I can relate to the lyrics, so this is a great song for me. 9/10 "Burnin' Up" This song oozes rock. It isn't really my favorite song on the CD, but I still really like listening to it. Madonna shows that she can sing low and high in this. Sounds great on the chorus. 6/10 "I Know It" This is easily one of Madonna's most underrated songs. It is in a different sort of style than the other songs on this album. This is probably one of my favorites. It reminds me of a song from the 60s. 7/10 "Holiday" This is one of the songs that has followed Madonna throughout her entire career. Awesome beat and kind of an ethnic sound. Gotta love those carefree lyrics! This song gets stuck in my head all the time, it's so catchy. 9/10 "Think of Me" I love the attitude in this song! Just the way the song sounds is really cool. It's kind of like elevator music -- 80s remix! Good song to dance to. 7/10 "Physical Attraction" The slowest song on the album, this one shows Madonna's personality and charisma. I love it, but you can't really dance to it like with all the others. 6/10 "Everybody" This is one of the greatest dance songs of all time. This is the song that got me hooked on Madonna for good. 10/10 The last two songs are different versions of "Burnin' Up" and "Lucky Star". Overall, I reccomend this album to anybody who likes this style of me. If you're new to Madonna, start with this album!
Madonna (1983) March 6, 2005 Dance Floor Junkie (Canada) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
-Madonna (1983)- Released back in 1983, when Madonna was still relatively unknown, this album helped her on her way to becoming the icon she is today. It's easy to see after the first time you listen to the album, that it's definitely a dance album. Not all of the songs have the best lyrics, but they definitely make up for that with how catchy they are. After "Everybody" became a big club hit in 1982, Madonna released "Holiday" as her first single, which gave her her first US Top 20 hit (#16). Madonna then released "Borderline", which gave her her first US Top 10 (#10), and "Lucky Star", which gave her her first US Top 5 (#4). The album was a slow seller at first, but ended up peaking at #8, and has managed to sell 5 million copies in the US alone since it's release. 1. Lucky Star (10/10) 2. Borderline (10/10) 3. Burning Up (10/10) 4. I Know It (9/10) 5. Holiday (10/10) 6. Think of Me (8/10) 7. Physical Attraction (10/10) 8. Everybody (10/10) 9. Burning Up [12" Version] (8/10) 10. Lucky Star [New Mix] (8/10) All in all, this a good, solid debut album. The unreleased songs off of the album, with the exception of "Think of Me", are very good. Especially "Physical Attraction". And although I'm not a big fan of remixes, the remixes of "Burning Up" and "Lucky Star" are quite good. But I definitely prefer the originals. Who would have known back in 1983, that Madonna would become the biggest female artist in history. Considering so many people were quick to write her off as a one-hit wonder. My Top 5 off of the album are... 5) Everybody 4) Burning Up 3) Borderline 2) Holiday 1) Physical Attraction
Gee, has it been 22 years already??? May 26, 2005 Donna Di Giacomo (Philadelphia, PA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm "old" enough to remember the Madonna craze that swept the nation in the early and mid-1980's: It seemed as though every adolescent kid (me) and teenaged girl wanted to copy her look with the tons of jewelry, the calf-length pants, the sky-high hair, the pounds of makeup, and the punk clothes. Of course, those of us still in the single digits of age would have gotten our hides kicked if we walked around in that much makeup, so we settled for listening to her album (back when it was actually an album!). I enjoy listening to Madonna's first self-titled album time and again because of the fact that, indeed, they're songs that can still be (and are) enjoyed to this day - 22 years later. "Burning Up" is special for us Madonna fans as this was her first video. The song sounds dated (those 80's synthesizers at work!) but you can always ignore that and just enjoy the beat. "Holiday" has become a classic party tune and whenever I hear "Borderline" I think of the video where she's playing a wanna-be model spray-painting on the wall and how the paint winds up on the photographer's car (who happens to have taken a romatic interest in her) and the look that says she just doesn't care. People can say whatever they want about Madonna but the woman has proven she can change according to the times and still match and/or outsell kids half her age. You can either like her or hate her, but there's definitely no in between. And, either way, she laughs all the way to the bank.
Madonna -- Madonna's first album August 5, 2005 Chicken (United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Released in 1983. Copies sold:- 10,000,000. "Madonna", released in 1983, was Madonna's first and one of her most slowest-selling albums. The album did not include many big hits, or made Madonna as famous as she is today, but it was her first step to it. There are some great disco tunes included in this album, and some of them proove to be Madonna classics, such as "Holiday", though it was not a massive hit when it was released. The other singles on this album are "Lucky Star" and "Borderline", which are also huge disco songs. 1. Lucky Star (5:38). #4 in the US. 10/10 2. Borderline (5:19). #10 in the US. 10/10 3. Burning Up (3:45). 9/10 4. I Know It (3:44). 9/10 5. Holiday (6:08). #16 in the US. 10/10 6. Think Of Me (4:54). 9/10 7. Physical Attraction (6:38). 10/10 8. Everybody (6:00). 10/10 9. Burning Up {12" Version) (5:56). 9/10 10. Lucky Star ("New" Mix) {7:15). 10/10 The overall percentage I rate this album is 96, as six of the songs I have rated get full marks, and four of them recieve nine points out of ten. The six songs I have rated ten out of ten are perfect. I especially love Lucky Star (both versions), Borderline and Physical Attraction. Holiday is also a great song, and a timeless Madonna classic. Everybody is also a brilliant effort from the Queen Of Pop! The last two tracks only come with the re-mastered edition of the album, and are worth hearing, especially the remix of Lucky Star. I highly recommend this album to any Madonna fan, especially beginners, as this is the ball-rolling effort from Madonna... An essential purchase.
excellent start February 27, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
this album is a great dance-pop album and it was madonna's first album. With carefree tunes full of soul, the queen of pop was getting started and here to stay. She's still excellent today with her American Life project. She's evolved beautifully through her music over the years. This was a feel good album that came out before she struck it big with like a virgin. Kind of like how michael jackson released off the wall but the best was yet to come and then BAM it was thrillermania! get it today, your madonna collection is incomplete without this CD, I bought it despite having the 3 big hits on immaculate collection, but it was worth it since they're extended and the flow of the album is so smooth
