5 out of 5 stars Bread's Greatest Hits on one cd, and remastered Too!   July 12, 2001
9 out of 11 found this review helpful

Bread was one of the top soft rock groups of the 70's. The songwriting of David Gates and James Griffin gave us tons of great hits. This collection contains all those hits plus some extras. If you enjoyed listening to Bread way back when then you'll certainly enjoy this disc. If, however, your a true Bread fan their Retrospective 2-cd set is for you. This cd has also been remastered for improved sound quality. A great collection from one of the 70's best loved groups. Also recommended is Bread's 2nd cd "On The Waters" which was one of their best l.p.'s ever recorded! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great overview of their music   October 31, 2004

Melodic soft rock, predominately ballads, was the trademark of Bread, a major pop group of the early seventies, who wrote their own songs. Song writing was itself a cause of friction within the band. David Gates wrote ballads, while James Griffin and Robb Royer (who wrote as a team) wrote generally more up-tempo material. However, their songs were not very successful, so it is easy to understand why people think David Gates was Bread's only songwriter. Of the Griffin-Royer songs, perhaps Look what you've done is the best known - but it was another ballad, not one of their more customary up-tempo songs.

So most of Bread's hits are by David Gates, including all the classics that everybody remembers. Make it with you, It don't matter to me, If (covered by actor Telly Savales, famous as Kojak, who had a British number one hit with it, but the original is far superior), Baby I'm a-want you, Everything I own (covered by reggae singer Ken Boothe, who had a British number one hit with it) and The guitar man. All these were huge hits in America, but only Make it with you was really big in Britain. However, the success that others had with covers proves that Brits like their songs. Other great songs include Diary, Sweet surrender and Lost without your love.

Those wishing to explore Bread's music further can either buy the original albums or the double CD (Retrospective), but this compilation has all the songs that most people want.

5 out of 5 stars Soft Rock Finesse   December 15, 2005

During the arena rockin' 70's there were soft rock/ pop alternatives. This collection represents the best of them. It was probably more acceptable to have listened to "The Carpenters" but "Bread" was right there too. There was nothing better for a romantic Saturday night with your favourite girl than some candles, some refreshments and some "Bread". David Gates, James Griffin and Robb Royer knew each other from a group called "Pleasure Faire". They added drummer Mike Botts and then Larry Knechtel when Royer left. And if you don't think that "Bread" ever rocked, try listening to "Let Your Love Go" or "Truckin'". Keep that for when your favourite girl is out. You wouldn't want her to get hit with your air guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Love Songs from days gone by   May 26, 2006

When I was a 14 year old girl back in 1975 and you broke up with your boyfriend (or even worse he broke up with you!!) this was the album that was put on the turntable and listened to for hours and hours while copious amount of tears were shed. This was the perfect album to pout by and you know what? It still is!!

Bread was an awesome band for their genre. No they weren't bad boys like the Stones or Led Zeppelin, but the combination of David Gates singing and songwriting abilities made them a great easy listening band for the early 70's.

This album has all of my personal favorites including "Everything I own" which can still move me to tears if I'm even a little bit sad and "Make it with you". I hadn't heard most of these songs in years and when I saw the DVD for sale I had to have it, even though I have been happily married for 27 years!!!

This is the ultimate album to bring back fond memories.
