2 out of 5 stars CROSSOVER VICTIM (Gospel to R&B)   February 7, 2002

Yolanda keeps disappointing me. Her best album by far was "Live in Washington, D.C." Her two latest album's: 1) Mountain High, Valley Low & 2) Believe are terrible from a Gospel standpoint. In "Live in D.C." she expressed God's love and mentioned JESUS numerous times. You could look at the back of the CD and listen to them and know instantly that they were Gospel songs but when you look at her CDs lately, you may see one or maybe two songs that express her faith. Then, when you listen to them you don't know if she's praising: a) a head of lettuce, b) Allah, or c) Christ. She replaces words like "Jesus" and "Christ" with "HE" or "HIM." I can't judge her heart but it appears that she's trying to increase sales and toning it down for her record label. Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, stand strong in their faith and have good records sales and probably sleep well at night knowing they didn't let Christianity down. I can't say that for Yolanda's last two albums. Live from D.C. is her best and will remain a classic forever.

    5 out of 5 stars Yolanda's at a New Place!   December 28, 2001

I knew from the onset when she returned to the studio that the next project would be different from Mountain High...Valley Low! I knew that the microscrope would be on her because of the monumental success of that project. Well, I'm here to let you know that Yolanda Adams Crawford did not disappoint! Yolanda is the kind of artist that you can not place in a box because she has to follow the leading of God's spirit! Every cd will be different. She strives with all of her heart to produce quality music, that not just sounds good but is able to reach the heart and spirit of a person. She has done exactly that with this project. This project has a flow and theme all on it's own. Whatever you do listener, do not buy this project expecting to find another Mountain High...Valley Low. Don't box Yolanda in like that...instead come find hope, encouragement, motivation and enlightment in Believe! Believe can be summed up in this statement right here: Yolanda informs the listener that it's not enough for you to have God in your life and him pushing you but you also have to have a confidence in yourself and confidence in the power of God that gives, sustains and enhances ones life. The first two tracks "Never Give Up" and "I Gotta Believe" encourages one to establish their dreams through dependence on God and he'll supply you with the confidence and strength you need to accomplish it! Never Give Up is a powerful, adult contemporary ballad while I Gotta Believe is a nice groovy pop song. Both have very good instrumentation. We then move into the nice duet "Fo' Sho'". The contemporary gospel song fits perfectly because it encourages you to not give up because things are going to work out Fo' Sho'. Both Karen and Yolanda sound marvelous and glides effortlessly through this song. The next song "Thank You" brings out the traditional gospel side of Yolanda as she grittingly say thank you to the Lord for what he has helped her to accomplished and has Blessed her with thus far! As she says, she's got to praise him like a crazy woman (sing girl). The next track "A Song of Faith" reminds you to keep your head up and keep pushing along while "Unconditional" reminds you where to keep looking! Song of Faith and Unconditional are nice R&B fused songs that have you banging your head to the side as you're driving or cleaning the house. Then it goes into what I feel are the three gems of the project. "Anything" is a nice mid-tempo hip hop groove written by Mary Mary and Warren Campbell and it keeps right up with the theme of the cd. Anything is one of Yolanda's best songs vocally on this project...she relaxes and just encourages the soul that you can do anything through Christ that strengthens you! The next song "Only If God Says Yes" says you can do anything but you have to make sure God has approval. With a slight string arrangement, this prayer in the form of a song soars and causes you to seek God before you make a rash move! Then my personal favorite "Since the Last Time I Saw You" is what one would say when they properly seek God before they move! Yolanda again soars as she testifies about the beauty of God once you've moved in his timing. The words are just gorgeous! She sings to all of us and let us know of the goodness of Jesus. "I'm Gonna Be Ready" is a beautifully written mid-tempo jazz ballad reminding you of a Faith Evans, Angie Stone type song that Yolanda takes on with full strides. The last two songs are songs of thanksgiving. "Darling Girl" is a tribute to her daughter Taylor Crawford. It's marvelous to hear the pride and joy in Yolanda's voice as she ligtens her tone and sings about and to the bundle of joy God has blessed her with while reminding parents of their heavenly responsibility! She then sums up the cd with "I'm Thankful" which says it all in the name of song. This is the only song that has a rap in it and it's filled with complete grooving instrumentation.

All in all, this is a very good cd and it's worthy of your attention and your money. You won't be disappointed but you'll feel better because you purchased it! Yolanda is a rare gospel artist and songbird for the Lord who he has raised up for such a time like this to speak to the nation! She's bold like Esther yet humble like the woman with the Alabaster Box. My friend, allow this cd to challenge your faith to go to another realm in the power of Jesus Christ!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Indeed!!!   February 26, 2002

This album is very inspirational! Starting with "Never Give Up" , "I Gotta Believe" "Fo Sho" "Thank You" "A Song of Faith" {Sorry, I just finished listening to this one several times so I am still singing it} "Unconditional" "Anything" "Only If God Says Yes" "Since The Last Time I Saw" "I'm Gonna Be Ready" {I'm sorry! This song touches me and reminds me of Yolanda's old cut "Even Me"} "Darling Girl" "Thankful"

Buy this song people. Call it gospel! Call it inspirational! Just buy it! Remember gospel music does NOT have to call GOD'S name every other word to minister you. That's a fallacy! Yolanda ministers in "Believe". I certainly feel the annointment and if you thoroughly listen to the lyrics and not just the beat like so many are guilty of, You will certainly get your share of blessings from this CD. I am just lovin' it! Oh Yeah! I am Thankful!!! Uh huh.... I'm am thankful...

5 out of 5 stars Full of inspiration. A wonderful, wonderful album.   May 25, 2005

I enjoy this whole album. Everytime I listen to this CD I feel so much better about my day, and my faith is recharged. I like I never have to skip a song when I listen to this CD. There are so many times I press repeat and just let a song repeat 2-4 times and start singing right along. Yolanda was blessed with a beautiful voice, and her songs are always right on time. This is one album you should have as part of your gospel collection. Yolanda gives her all in every song she sings. Believe is an excellent, excellent album.

These are the songs I will repeat when I need to recharge my spirit:

    2. I gotta believe
    6. Unconditional
    7. Anything
    8. Only if God Says Yes
    12. I'm thankful

I'm thankful is different from what Yolanda usually does. Her songs are usually mid-tempo or slow temp songs, but this one is upbeat and hip. It was a treat for me, and a song I love working out to.

Some of the wonderful Lyrics to Thankful:

You're there to pick me up
    Whenever I fall down
    And I can't say enough
'Bout the things you've done for me
    Without you in my life
    I don't know where I'd be
    Release my heart felt praise
Gonna life my voice and sing.

    Chorus
Gonna raise my hands up to the sky
    Use every breath to glorify
Your name your work your way
    'Cause I'm so thankful
For life, for health, for strength to live
    For sharing love and fellowship
For every blessing that you give
    I'm thankful

I'm thankful there is an artist as talented and annointed like Yolanda to spread her words of inspiration through music. This is an album you must have in your collection.

I truly do not like this album. There are only a couple of songs that stir my soul. I am growing weary of artist crossing over and replacing the name Jesus with He and Him. If I am hating, then that is your opinion. I've enjoyed her past albums, up until the live version of Mountain High...Valley Low. When you have to tell people that you're singing about Jesus?....I mean that speaks volumes. I love Yolanda, but I hope she goes to another label. I think this label is sapping her talent. They don't allow her voice to really shine through. If your looking for raw vocal talent(what you're accustomed to hearing from her), this album is not for you. Peace and Blessings
