5 out of 5 stars A Haunting And Mournful Music score   January 30, 2004
Clint Eastwood's score to "Mystic River" is a first rate accomplishment and music that stands alone without the film. It's main theme, a mournful dirge that repeats itself in different variations throughout the film, seems repetitious at first. But as the story unfolds that main theme becomes a powerful reminder of past sins and regrets for several characters in Brian Helgeland's screenplay adaptation of Denis Lehane's novel. Eastwood's film misses being great by a wide margin but it is an ambitious effort that features some spectacular acting. The music score contributes immeasurably to the sometimes implausible drama.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly it just doesn't work   June 27, 2004
While I was watching the film, there were some spots that I thought the music went pretty well with what was on screen. However, most of the time I was wondering what the heck the composer was thinking. Near the end the score even turns into something you'd hear in a horror film rather than a drama. The score is just too all over the place. The main theme is also repeated way too much with basically no variation at all. I didn't know Eastwood scored it until I came hear to see who scored it. I did like the film a lot. I just think Eastwood should stick to directing.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful   May 27, 2005
I found this soundtrack haunting and beautiful. I really enjoyed the music it was thought provoking and sadly blissfull.
