    1 out of 5 stars I'll pass....   October 31, 2007

Based on a great-sounding performance on one of the morning news shows, I would have probably bought this.

But after I heard the samples of each track, and experienced how her voice is masked behind so many electronic effects, I'll just skip this one. Sorry, Emmy, but the cover art is better than the music. If you had just done the same songs without all the busy background stuff, this might have been a definite 'buy' for me.

2 out of 5 stars Can't hear her talent for the effects...   November 3, 2007

I wasn't aware that she sings, and was immediately intrigued upon discovering this. Having only listened to all Amazon samples offered (I realize that the sound quality here is less than perfect), I was not impressed with the presentation of her voice, nor the repetetive wispy arrangements. Disclaimer: It should be noted that, while open-minded, I am a traditionally oriented semi-pro musician.

I found the samples provided (and presumably the undisclosed content) to be lacking in any diversity, reverb and effects-heavy, and certainly Enya-like. Not much back-beat here, save 1 or 2 club-style thumpers. I struggled to hear any non-electronic instruments in the mix. I respect those that like this approach, but I sensed an effort to disguise imperfections (don't they have software for that nowadays?)

I liked the tone and apparent strength of her voice, but the over-processing buries it far beyond my taste. For equally talented under-the-radar female voice talent, tip an ear toward Jonatha Brooke (lyrics that hit so close to home that it can be difficult) and Mindy Smith, who don't hide behind the studio gear.

3 out of 5 stars I really really really wanted to like this CD, but...   December 27, 2007

Emmy Rossum is a fantastic singer with excellent range. You can hear this in the recent remake of Phantom of The Opera. This album doesn't bother to capitalize on her formal training, but instead, forces her through the ringer and makes the voice rendered useless. The CD comes across as an Imogen Heap clone, and a poor copy at that. The songs are somewhat weak and the music is overproduced, so you can't get an idea of what her talents are. 'Slow Me Down' is probably the best song on the CD and you can feel it being weighed down by oversampling. It's sad, really. So much promise wasted.

I hope that her second album ditches the person who produced this album and works with someone who can utilize her talents and range.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful debut album   October 23, 2007

Ms. Emmy Rossum isn't just a Golden Globe nominated actress, she is also a first rate musician and a delightful pop singer. Unlike her predecessor in the role of Christine Daae, Sarah Brightman, Miss Rossum was smart enough to reject all offers to record an album containing classical arias. She went for Ambient Pop instead and chose to present her innermost thoughts and fears to her listeners. I cannot agree with the former reviewer re: Imogen Heap or Enya, true, they too recorded Ambient Pop but neither of them "owns" this genre. I prefer Rossum's voice to that of Imogen and I much prefer her simplicity to Enya's interpretations.

My favorites are "The Great Divide", "Inside Out" and "Stay", all three are highly emotional songs and show off Miss Rossum's range and vocal colors beautifully. Her singing is innocent and knowing at the same time, here we have none of Spear's bubbly stupidity, Agiluera's (Sp?) pseudo eroticism or Brightman's dreadful Popera. These songs are great for both relaxing and listening to intense songs. They can be soothing or stirring, they are beautiful inside out. (No pun intended) A wonderful solo debut by a lovely artist.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut!   October 24, 2007

Emmy Rossum's first CD is not what you would expect from such an incredible talent, but it is still very much a treat. Unless she were to try her hand at Gansta Rap it is hard to imagine a music genre she would not excel in. For those of you who enjoy the music of artists such as Michelle Tumes or Enya, I would highly recommend this CD. But I still recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys music in general. Perhaps the greatest thing about Ms. Rossum, however, is that, though she is incredibly beautiful, she does not use sex to sell her music. How refreshing to see a positive role model for young women today! She is the anti-slut with a level head on her shoulders. And with real talent to boot! I look forward to her follow-up CD someday. God bless Emmy Rossum!
