Fresher than Ever! January 24, 1999 32 out of 34 found this review helpful
Jazz historians know this date: April 22, 1959, the date on which Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and James Cobb recorded the watershed "Kind of Blue" album. That this CD represents yet another re-issue of this landmark recording is appropriate at a time when renewed interest in jazz is especially keen. There are, of course, many fans who never left this uniquely American art form. Yet, as Rock N' Roll and the subsequent British Invansion swept up the counter-culture that birthed modern jazz in its inception, jazz very nearly lost its pre-imminent voice among that larger audience. It is not just that the technical problems which beset earlier releases of "Kind of Blue" have been admirably solved and addressed in this CD, it is a recording to "come back" to. As in live sessions and in the original recording sessions, Miles' phrasing is full-throated (not tinny or off-key) and spontaneously brilliant in the absolute richness of the musical ideas they represent. Likewise, witness Coltrane and Adderly who dazzle with seemingly infinite improvisational motifs seamless in their gestaltic wholeness. Then there is Bill Evans; what can be said of such genius and vituosity that his notes are precisely "right" yet never fail to delight or surprise? If you are one of those who momentarily left jazz, "Come back" to this CD. Listen yet again for the first time. At a time when Rock is sounding tired and long in the tooth, Miles and crew have never sounded fresher or newer.
All Blues rules, Miles Is Mighty. September 25, 2007 Steve Guardala (Land Of The Dying Gaul!!!) 26 out of 27 found this review helpful
I have not listened to Jazz in years, so this review is a balance of past memories & the recent listening to this fine compilation. The great thing about Jazz is the balance between creativity & structure. When the musicians {Paul Chambers, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Julian Adderley, & Jimmy Cobb} are in cync, good things occur. My father use to tell me the language of Jazz music can be felt on a deep intuitive level. The five tunes here proved him right. They are "So What, Freddie Freeloader, Blue In Green, All Blues, & Flamenco Sketches." Surprisingly, all the cuts on this Cd are first takes. Bill Evans on Piano provides the formal details, or character. The total mood of this Cd is of a very mellow daydream of pleasant contemplation. Buy this even if you have never heard any Jazz, you won't be disappointed.
Miles' Legendary "Kind Of Blue" June 7, 2003 Alan Caylow (USA) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
Miles Davis' 1959 opus "Kind Of Blue" is one of the most popular jazz albums ever made, another one of those rare "every home should have one" recordings. Even if you're NOT a big jazz buff, you should have this album. So, what is it about "Kind Of Blue" that makes it so special? I can only say that Miles Davis and his cracking band of jazz greats---Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb---created an album with outstanding mood & melody, where all the notes ebb & flow, and where all the musicians get to strut their stuff without stepping on each other. There's no instrumental "noodling" to be found anywhere on "Kind Of Blue". The album has a great cohesiveness to it, where every improvised note you hear makes perfect sense. Miles Davis knew that musical magic could be achieved through spontaneous invention, as long as each piece had a basic "setting" for the musicians to work within. Davis & company rise to the challenge and then some on "Kind Of Blue." From the classic opener "So What," to the concluding "Flamenco Sketches," the music is wonderful, melodic and breezy, but most of all, cool. It's amazing to think that this classic album was finished in a mere two sessions, with every track except one nailed down in a single take ("Flamenco Sketches" took two takes to complete). Drummer Jimmy Cobb famously said that "Kind Of Blue" must have been made in Heaven. I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't claim to be a top authority on classic jazz, as I'm just starting to check out the classic recordings, and there are many fans of the genre who know much more about it than I do. But I do know what I like, and I LOVE Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue." It's a jazz masterwork that anyone can like, and that everyone should own. God bless Miles & his supreme team of musicians for this legendary album.
Classic Miles -- Classic Jazz -- A MUST OWN! November 26, 1999 a jazz fan, musician and high school student (New Jersey) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
This was my very first jazz album, and it is still my favorite. After listening to many other recordings by many other artists (including a small amount of today's "smooth" jazz, which is really elevator music with another name), I still come back to Kind of Blue. This work, like all truly magnificent works in every genre of art, works on many levels. It is wonderful background music, and it is infinitely more amazing when one truly LISTENS to what the musicians are doing on the tracks. If you love jazz but for whatever reason have missed this album, BUY IT - you will not be disappointed. If you have never listened to jazz before (smooth jazz doesn't count), this cd is a perfect entry into the realm of jazz. Its recording artists all became famous on their own afterwards, and in Kind of Blue, the mastery of each is obvious. Its music achieves perfection and timelessness, and is a monument of jazz - a great buy!
This Is THE Jazz album February 3, 2002 Donovan Juan (Perth, WA Australia) 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
This album is probably the most flawless Jazz masterpiece ever released. Miles must have been one hellova talent scout to get John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley together on this classic Album. What makes this album so great? Firstly the artists are some of the most influential artists in the Jazz World. Secondly, this is not just an ordinary jazz album. By using modes instead of chord structures to base improvisation, Miles gave his sidemen (and himself) the artistic freedom to express themeselves. You will hear on this album Miles's signature emotional playing, John Coltrane's reflective and haunting style and Adderley's cheery personality seeping into his music. The tracks chosen are perfect, with So What probably being the best cut, altough they are all lovely. This album is no where near as hard as some of Miles's later work, and so will appeal to more people. The best thing about this album is that every single not just belongs where it is, and it sounds as fresh as anything released today. The sound quality of the CD reissue is fantastic (except for the slight tape hiss) and it feels like the musicians are right in front of you. Even if you don't like jazz, get this; you may change your mind. This is truly the work of a musician's musician.
